Manitoulin Spotlight: BabyBits.ca + a Giveaway!

By now, most of you know how much I absolutely love this island I now call 'home'.  Apart from being a majestic, magical, peaceful place to live (for those of us who love being in nature and enjoy outdoor activities), Manitoulin Island is home to many incredible small businesses.

I love supporting local businesses.  There's something so special about the love and time small business owners put into their craft.  Whether it be products or services, our household definitely supports local Manitoulin businesses.

One of the newest businesses I have had the pleasure of discovering is BabyBits.ca! I was given a few items to try on Little One.
My little girl  loves the headbands and elastics she was given. Very cute, comfortable, and well made.

Every single item is made lovingly by hand.  When visiting BabyBits.ca, I was shown many different fabrics, shades of material and other items used to create these beautiful headbands! The flowers are all so unique and pretty! I have little secret. I actually use some of the hair ties that were given to Little One!

Here are some beautiful items BabyBits has for little cuties!

I am happy to have been able to interview Bev, the owner of BabyBits.ca.

1. Please tell us a little bit about yourself.
I am a mom of two; a 3 year old boy and a 4 month old baby girl.  A web developer by profession, but a crafter at heart.  I love making things, be it by crafting or painting.  Although, with two little ones, I haven't had a lot of extra time lately, even though I am on maternity leave.

2. How did your business come about?
When I would take my daughter on a walk, people would stop and say, what a cute little boy you have.  I would correct them, and say "little girl".  She doesn't have much hair, and looks a lot like her brother.  For this reason, and since her 3 month pictures were coming up soon, I decided to look for baby headbands.  I didn't find any local stores that sold them, then I looked online.  I found a lot of places that sold them, but none that were in my price range.  This is when I thought I could make them myself (being crafty and all).  So I created my own website (http://www.babybits.ca), setup a Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/babybitscanada, and started an Etsy shop (http://www.etsy.com/shop/babybitscanada).

3. Tell us more about your products.
I hand-make all my products.  Satin flower headbands and hair clips for infants, babies, toddlers, and girls of all ages.  I also make elastic hair ties.  The headbands and hair clips are made to order..  Customers choose a colour and style of flower and headband, and I make the item.  Some pre-made products are available at M&R Jewellery in Gore Bay (http://www.mrjewellery.ca).

4. Is there a message you'd like to share with readers?
I will also be attending the following Christmas craft shows:  MSS - Nov 16 & 17, Kagawong Nov 23 & 24, and Tehkummah Dec 1.

 5. What advice can you give other mompreneurs like yourself?
When you have an idea that you would like to do, follow your heart.  I'm not a big business, and pleasing my customers is what I am aiming for.  This will ensure repeat business.

5. What are your hopes and dreams for your business?
I want to provide my customers with affordable hair accessories for their children.  I hope that they enjoy the product and are repeat customers.  All profits from sales are going into my children's RESP's.

I hope to help spread the word on another great Island business. Please pop by and send BabyBits.ca some love!

Great news!

BabyBits.ca would like to give one lucky Life on Manitoulin reader a set of 3 headbands (colours and size to be selected by winner) and a set of 6 hair ties (colours to be selected by winner)! To enter, simply fill out the Rafflecopter form below!

I'm loving the flower headbands. My LikMiss is all about pretty things and I am always looking for easy ways her dad can do her hair, keep it out of her face but still keep things super girly.

I'm in a mobile device so I couldn't look at her while gallery. Wondering if she'd put the flowers on a hair tie. We tend to rock the pony tails a lot here to keep the hair out of the way.

Cherry, yes, definitely we could put the flowers on a hair tie. Thanks for all the wonderful comments everyone! I am glad you like them.

I like the headbands with the small flowers - my tiny granddaughters are almost bald - their hair is starting to grow, so barrettes won't work yet.
