Chinese New Year Activities For Kids
Coming from a mixed cultural background, I want to expose our daughter to her heritage. Yes, she's Canadian, but she's also got Filipino, Spanish, Chinese, Caribbean, Scottish, and English roots. With Chinese New Year just around the corner, I would like to celebrate! I've been coming up with some Chinese New Year activities for kids.
Since it's the Year of the Snake, here's an adorable and easy craft to do with the kids.
For details on how to make your own Chinese New Year Snake craft, visit the Craftiments blog.
Last year, for our very first Chinese New Year celebration on "the Island", my friend made gluten-free fortune cookies with her daughter. They were amazing! I found a basic fortune cookie recipe online that I may give a try.
Apart from each guest bringing one Chinese New Year dish, we're also going to be lighting Chinese lanterns and having the kids release them into the night sky! I found these great photos on the Lido Gallery site and some info on the symbolism of the lanterns.
Will you be celebrating Chinese New Year with your family this year?

We were initially going to MAKE our own Chinese lanterns with the kids, but found some inexpensive ones on eBay.
I think the children will all enjoy releasing their lanterns and making wishes. Here's an excerpt from the lidogallery blog:
Buddhists believe the sky lanterns are symbolic of your problems and worries floating away. They are offered to temples and monks in return for enlightenment, as the flame of the lantern symbolizes wisdom. The lantern’s light shows them to the ‘right path’.
During the Yuan Dynasty in the 13th century, Chinese Lanterns became a symbol of hope and good wishes. Citizens used them to bless their crops and to pray for what they needed. The belief was the sky lantern would float up to the heavens to be closer to the god’s ears. The more lanterns used, the greater chance their wishes and prayers would come true. Today during the Chinese New Year, millions of sky lanterns are released over a two week period with a wish for good luck and prosperity in the coming year.I hope you enjoy these Chinese New Year Activities for kids!
Will you be celebrating Chinese New Year with your family this year?

City girl moves to the country, falls in love, and marries a farmer. She tries to incorporate her city ways with her new country lifestyle and blogs to keep in touch with friends, family & students who live far, far away :) Can this city girl go country? Watch as she learns all sorts of exciting things about life on the farm and in a small rural community. *UPDATE* We are now parents! Our baby girl was born on Nov. 11, 2008 (at 28 weeks gestation- 12 weeks premature, but she's quite the trooper)!!!

I love that snake, so colourful. What a great idea!
Awesome idea! Maybe I'll try some of these activities with the kiddos.
It's so funny that I'm reading this post, we just went out a couple of weekends ago to a Chinese restaurant and found out that myself and my son were born the year of the pig, DD7 year of the roster and hubby year of the rat, lol. The kids got a great kick out of that.
Little Miss Kate:
Oh, I know! I love that snake! Too cute!!!
Just Us Girls:
Oh, now I feel like having Chinese food! LOL!
Chinese astrological signs are interesting, aren't they? I also feel they're pretty bang on!! I was born in the year of the rabbit and it describes me to a tee!
It's been my dream to get some of those lanterns - ever since Tangled. The little too. They're always on the daily deal websites but I'm afraid I'll start fires. Thanks for the inspiration!
I absolutely love the look of all the lanterns going into the sky. It's so beautiful!
Ted and I are both snakes. I should try to make that one to celebrate! Maya's not fond of Chinese food, though she does like pot stickers and sweet and sour. Sad, really, because we love so much of it.
Maya's a cute little rat. :)
lovely post and ideas happy new year
