A teacher friend of mine and I were discussing some of the things we miss most about our life in Japan. Among culture, travel, food, nightlife, social life, art, history, friends, colleagues and students, we both agreed that we missed Japanese TV! If you have ever watched a Japanese TV game show, you'll know why we miss it! This video clip of "Takeshi's Castle" reminds me of the fun we had in Japan. The TV show has been translated into English and can be seen on Spike TV as "MXC: Most Extreme Elimination Challenge".
By "Takeshi's Castle" reminds me of the fun we had in Japan." I don't mean that we used to do those crazy things! I meant that we used to get together and watch the TV game shows together. Good times :)
ive only seen snippets and clips from this (no cable!), and the color and motion and "wall of sound" effect kind of reminds me of the clips i've seen from spanish-language television, maybe less ribald... but all in good fun... i loves me hijinx!
That's funny you get those old shows there. There are some funny newer game shows here now. Personally, I'm more inclined to watch Japanese "home dramas"- You remember those?
MXC - we used to let Liam stay up to watch that with us on Spike (I know, we're demented parents). Now we can't figure out when it's on TV. I especially loved when the teams would go racing down a mountain and have these huge "boulders" come crashing down after them. Priceless!
We actually have a long-running Filipino version of Takeshi's Castle on free TV!!! Thank God for small things, huh, Chrissy? It's just plain good ol' scripted fun. What people would do... what people would do to get a huge laugh. Thanks for sharing.
Ms.Mamma: Hey, gorgeous! Yeah, I'm not only about literature, A&E, Bravo!, Life Channel, FoodTV, History Channel, etc...I love me some pure fun and cheese sometimes! ;)
We don't get all these channels at our house though, since we aren't in the house enough to watch much TV. I suppose we could get more channels if we wanted to, but in a way it's good that we don't have them. We don't watch much TV, and plus, with students around, I'm careful of what TV programs are available...if you know what I mean! ;)
I do catch a few shows if I'm at my parents'. They have all the good TV channels! LOL!

Karen: I used to watch it on Spike TV too! I think it was on late at night though. I don't have Spike TV here (I don't want the students to be watching some of the things on that channel). When I housesit my parents' house, I get to watch SpikeTV though! The boulders!!! HAHA! Yes, that always cracks me up! I usually laugh so hard watching MXC that my sides hurt. I just love slapstick humour sometimes!
Kim: Really??? There's a Filipino version of Takeshi's Castle??? How come no one told me about it when I was in San Jose!?! LOL! Actually, we didn't even watch ANY TV when we were there! We were so busy visiting family, visiting friends, sightseeing, shopping, eating, eating, eating. Why do we always have to eat at each house we visit? I visited 4 different family members' houses in one day, and each time, they FORCE you to eat! Seriously! They actually FORCE people to eat! :) My grandmother's cooks had made all of our meals too, so the other eating was on top of all the regular meals. Urgh. I think we all gained 10 lbs by the time we returned to Canada!
Chrissy - - I used to watch this show in university! I thought it was the most unreal thing ever. People dressed as hands, being run over by large balls or riding around on huge mushrooms?! I couldn't understand where it 'really' came from. So its a real show huh? ha ha...

Chasing Daylight: :) Yes, it is indeed a real show. Japanese TV just cracks me up. It does seem really surreal, doesn't it? I know it sounds silly and juvenile, but I really laugh so hard seeing the contestants falling off of giant mushrooms and getting bonked on the head by giant boulders. I know...I'm so ashamed! LOL!
Curiosity: Yeah, I used to be too self-conscious to do anything silly when I was younger. I was always worried about looking like a dork. Now that I'm older, I don't really mind doing anything crazy for a good laugh :) I participated in the winter festival here and did we did all kinds of crazy stunts in the name of fun (and to entertain the kids)! LOL! Funny how a person can change :) If my friends wanted to do something like an MXC thingy, I'd totally be in! LOL!

City girl moves to the country, falls in love, and marries a farmer. She tries to incorporate her city ways with her new country lifestyle and blogs to keep in touch with friends, family & students who live far, far away :) Can this city girl go country? Watch as she learns all sorts of exciting things about life on the farm and in a small rural community. *UPDATE* We are now parents! Our baby girl was born on Nov. 11, 2008 (at 28 weeks gestation- 12 weeks premature, but she's quite the trooper)!!!

Oh, I LOVE this show! It's FUCKING HILARIOUS!!! Especially with hundreds of enthusiastic Japanese people so eager to be humiliated! It's so funny!!
