The Great Grocery Giveaway & BBQ Time with @MarcAngeloFoods!

It's a known fact that I love hosting dinner parties.  With Father's Day just around the corner, I'd like to fire up the BBQ and have a meal for the two special men in my life - my husband and my Dad. This said, special occasions or no real reason at all, every day is a celebration for friends and family.  Most of the time, I spend hours cooking up a storm, but there are days when it's nice to have a little help in the kitchen.

Recently, I learned that MarcAngelo carries a wide variety of both fresh and frozen items in grocery stores across Canada. You've probably seen them at your local grocery store already! Some favourite items include Souvlaki and Kabobs, Steaks and Sausages perfect for the BBQ, and they even have newer items like Turkey Burgers, Breakfast Rounds, Chicken Breast Roasts with Bacon, and more!

Some other interesting facts about MarcAngelo Foods:

With friends and family with Celiac disease and gluten intolerance, I'm always looking for great meals to serve that everyone can eat.  This is why I was excited to learn that MarcAngelo is working with the Gluten-Free Certification Program.  Many of the same great tasting sausages that Canadians know and love are now gluten-free* certified by the Gluten-Free Certification Program (GFCP). Many other MarcAngelo products are also safe for those with Celiac disease and other gluten intolerances. (*just look for the GFCP trademark on packages)

To help kick off BBQ season, MarcAngelo has something fun and exciting for their fans and customers. The Great Grocery Giveaway!  Perfect timing, since Father's Day and BBQ go hand in hand!

@Pampers Ding Dong Diaper Ditch Challenge! #PGMom @PGInsider

I remember what it was like when Little One was a newborn.  Though she spent the first 72 days of life in the NICU at Mount Sinai, bringing baby home was an amazing yet eye opening experience.

I remember just wanting to hold her and stare at her all the time. Of course, with having a new baby at home comes the mountains and mountains of laundry and the diaper changes! The diapers! Who knew that babies go through that many diapers?!

One of the things I love about being a #PGMom is that I get to share the luv with friends, family, and readers.  I am able to share great products, savings, and so much more. This post in particular warms my heart.

A bunch of PGMoms were given opportunity to participate in the Pampers Ding Dong Diaper Ditch Movement. Our mission was to surprise an unsuspecting family with a wonderful baby package (valued at $85) that consisted of:
  • Pampers Swaddlers diapers - Number one choice of hospitals. The nurses in the NICU used Pampers on the babies when Little One was in the hospital. Love that Pampers have diapers for preemies too! Soft, comfortable and wraps baby in comfort and security.
  • Pampers Sensitive wipes - Gently cleans baby's delicate skin. Clinically proven mild. Dermatologist tested. Perfume and alcohol free.
  • Ivory Snow Liquid Detergent - Gentle on baby's sensitive skin yet designed to clean tough messes from baby's clothing.
  • a copy of "Caring for Kids: The Complete Guide to Children's Health"
  • a Canada onesie (with bib and tuque)
I have tons of friends with babies, but wanted to share this special baby package with someone I had been thinking about for the past while. I hadn't seen her in ages, and now she has another little one!

When I was on Facebook with her this past week, something our conversation made me feel I had to perform a random act of kindness and she was the person I wanted to make smile. I guess that wasn't really random then. It seems a tad predetermined/premeditated!

On a blustery Friday afternoon, I drove to the family's home and propped the box by their front door! Sadly, I was too excited about the Drop Off that I didn't have the foresight to wrap up the baby package in a pretty basket and with a pretty bow! Check out the little video I made with my BlackBerry Z10's Story Maker
app!

No video of the surprised mom, as she was...ummm...nursing her sweet baby! So thrilled to be able to spread the warmth and joy.

Thankful to have been given the opportunity to surprise a special family.

Well.ca wants to help new parents too by ensuring mom and dad don't have to go past their doorstep for a refill on Pampers. Subscribe to Pampers on well.ca before April 15th and get a 15% discount and up to 500 Gifts to Grow points on select Pampers purchases. You also get 50 bonus Welcome points when you sign up!

Disclosure - As part of the PGMom program, I received the above products for an in-person giveaway. As a member of the PGMom program, I receive perks and products for review and am given the opportunity to share with readers via giveaways. Parting is Such Sweet Sorrow

Yesterday, we said goodbye to one of my ESL students. He came to study with me last September and the time has come for him to end his studies on the Island. For the past eight months, he has been a regular fixture in Little One's life. I sometimes think she believes that he is her brother.  They play together, she argues with him, he spoils her, keeps her occupied...and they have become best buddies.

It was so sad to say goodbye.
She really loves her buddy, DW!
We took the students on a field trip to Bridal Veil Falls the day before our student left. Little One got to accompany us on our trip.
P.S. Isn't her backpack just adorable? You can win one on my reviews blog!

Homemade Baby Food

Back when Little One was just starting on solids, I decided to make all of her baby food from scratch. I can't believe that was over a year ago!

I've written an article with a few baby food recipes for the BornFreeMom site. I've included a few easy, healthy, fool-proof recipes. Little One LOVED them. She's now eating whatever we eat, but those recipes were great for making in large batches and freezing in ice cube trays. I'd let the baby food cool and then freeze them in ice cube trays. Once frozen, I'd remove them from the trays and store them in freezer bags, making sure all the air was removed from the bags. I'd even double freezer bag them most of the time (because I'm paranoid like that).

If you read my article and leave a comment with some of your favourite baby food recipes, you can win a Born Free Baby Formula Dispenser!

Too Cool To Not Check Out!

Many of y0u know that one of our nieces has Celiac disease. Whenever she's at our house, I like to make sure that we have food that she can eat. I need to keep in mind that we must have a few dishes that do not contain gluten.

Since I love to cook, I've scoured the internet for gluten free recipes. A few years ago, I came across Gluten Free Mom's blog. It is by far the best gluten free recipes blog I have found. Not only are her recipes delicious, but she has been generous enough to have a Le Creuset Giveaway on her blog too! The stoneware is perfect for the oven, microwave, and broiler. It's also refrigerator and freezer safe. It's a "must have" in the kitchen if you love to cook!

Ohhhh! How I'd love to win this prize!
It's even in my FAVOURITE colour!!!

Oh! Not only is Gluten Free Mom kind enough to offer this giveaway to her readers, but she also includes a fabulous Gluten Free Macaroni and Cheese recipe.

Cool Things

Growing up, I spent a lot of time with my cousins. We were (and still are) like brothers and sisters. I always counted myself lucky to be as close as I was/am with my family.
When school let out and summer rolled around, the cousins, my brothers and I would hang out together. As kids, we'd have sleepovers, spend our days outside, try not to get into mischief, and do the things kids do when they're kids.

We'd go for bike rides, make fortresses out of sofa cushions and bed sheets in the basement, pretend we were WWF wrestling heroes, and have our own mini Olympics in the swimming pool. Bonus points for the best cannon ball. Whoever could make the biggest splash scored a perfect score. Even more bonus points for the best belly flop.

Summers always seemed to be over all too soon. I truly miss those days. Days filled with fun, adventure, and my family. Those were the days of innocence and youth. They were the days of not having to worry about adult things like work and bills and responsibility. Our biggest worry was deciding what we'd do if it rained. The answer to that most likely involved playing Donkey Kong Jr and the Smurfs on COLECO Vision, Zaxxon on Atari, or playing hours of Monopoly until we got tired or bankrupt.

Another thing that reminds me of those special times with my cousins is...

This childhood favourite is available here at http://www.jetbaby.com/ !!! Thanks for the blast from the past, JetBaby! I am going to get one for Little One! I know she's a bit young for it still, but I'll keep it in good hands (evil laugh) until she's old enough for it!
Oh, and if you're in the Oakville area, hop on over to JetBaby for "Cool clothes for half-pint hipsters"!
Tell me...What are some of your favourite childhood memories?

Finally, the winners for the BuddyBandz give away I hosted are...
Tracy and Marie! I'll contact you today for your mailing info and will ship out the bands ASAP. I hope this helps increase awareness regarding your children's food allergies! My niece proudly sports her "No Peanut/Nut" band! Thank you to those who have helped spread the word. Food allergies are serious and prevention is key! Don't forget to check out the BuddyBandz site!

This Can Save Your Child's Life

Years ago, when I was in school, it didn't seem like food allergies were very common. In fact, growing up, I didn't know anyone with food allergies.

Well, there is one exception. I do remember being in high school and having an end of the season baseball party for the baseball team my Dad was coaching. My Mom made her Filipino BBQ and several different salads. One of the boys on the team (who was probably 17 at the time) kept going back for seconds and thirds and all of a sudden he started turning red, puffy, then almost purple! He excused himself and said he was going to come back. Hours later, his parents called us and said that the boy was in the hospital. He was allergic to nuts and fish, and the marinade for the BBQ included peanut butter. The dressing for the Caesar Salad had anchovy paste in it.
You would think that a person with allergies would inform people that he or she had severe, life-threatening allergies. Now, it is customary for us to ask if anyone has any allergies before we prepare a meal for them. I know in our household, I always ask our students to fill out a questionnaire before they arrive.

It seems that now people are more aware of food allergies. My brother, who never had any allergies as a child has discovered just in the recent years that he has a few serious allergies. Serious enough to require him to carry an Epi-Pen with him. We were all surprised to discover that one of his allergies is to mushrooms! My brother loved mushrooms growing up! Mushroom caps, fried mushrooms, mushroom on pizza and in Chinese food. Now, if he's even in the same room as mushrooms, he can go into Anaphylactic shock. Very scary.

Hubby and I have nieces with food allergies, so we're also very careful and mindful of what we have in the house and what we serve. We know all too well how serious and even fatal food allergies can be.

Now, a friend I went to elementary school and high school with has started a company called BUDDY BANDZ. Lisa Sanderson is the President, Owner and Founder of the company that I am so proud to introduce to you.Lisa's two sons both have food allergies. Her youngest son has a peanut allergy and her eldest has a shellfish allergy. Lisa came up with the idea of having a bracelet with "No Peanuts" around it to remind friends and family of her sons' allergies. This was the birth of Buddy Bandz.

Buddy Bandz is a Canadian company that operates from Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts, Quebec. I cannot stress enough how important prevention is. Increase food allergy awareness and ease anxiety during stressful occasions like:

*Summer Camp *Day Camp *Birthday Parties *Play Centers *School *Daycare
*Family Gatherings *Pinics *Playdates

For more information on Buddy Bandz, click on the company's website address here.

Because I am so excited about Buddy Bandz, and would like to take part in increasing awareness of food allergies, I am giving away TWO Buddy Bandz! I've got one "No Eggs" and one "No Dairy" band to give away. The "No Peanuts" and "No Shellfish" bands have already been spoken for. If you have a child with egg allergies or dairy allergies...or if you know anyone who has a child with these allergies, please leave me a comment. Recipients will be chosen at random and I will contact you for mailing details.
The deadline to enter for this give away is June 8, 2009.
