A Movie Contest!!!

Some of my fondest childhood memories are of curling up on the couch with my mom and a box of Kleenex, bawling our eyes out as we watched the most poignant, memorable tearjerkers on TV. My mom and I would just sob and sob! My dad used to ask us why we even bothered watching movies if we were going to cry like that.

I just treasured those moments with mom. Tears and all. Even after all these years, I will never be able to forget those wonderful movies we watched together.

Here is my list for the "Top 5 Saddest Movies Ever Made":

I'm a huge believer in "what goes around, comes around" and "you get from the universe what you put out". Having had the recent good fortune of winning an amazing prize, I would like to pass on a little good fortune to someone else.

If you can name all of these movies, the year these movies came out and the main actors in each, then you will win a neat little prize. What's this prize, you ask? As you know, I love promoting my friends and their businesses. The winner gets some of these:

**Contest closes on Monday, April 21st at midnight.** I will announce the winner on Tuesday, April 22nd. In event of a tie (or multiple correct answers), I'll write your names on a piece of paper. Hubby will choose a name at random. If your name gets picked, you win!

Even if you do not wish to enter the contest, drop me a line and let me know what your "Top 5 Saddest Movies Ever Made" are! :)

Canine:
Hubby said you made a good point! LOL! He said everyone would just wait until other people have posted and "borrow" answers from those who have posted.

Okay, everyone can e-mail me at this e-mail address: cg underscore lee 121875 at hotmail dot com. In the subject box, type in "CONTEST" so I'll know you're not a spammer (in case I don't recognize your e-mail addy).

Please also leave me a message here in the comment section, letting me know that you have submitted your answers and have entered the contest.

Wow! Looks like we're both online at the same time! You're right...You are fast!!!

Hey, I was just thinking of you guys today! I was in my car, driving home and the scenery was so stunning! I thought, "Wow! Canine, TC and Bert are going to have soooooo much fun when they visit!!!"

Cherry:
OMG! ALL of those movies you listed made me cry!!! I am such a wuss! LOL!

Unknown said...

Hot Mommy:
Silly! I would NEVER think you were stupid!!! Okay, ALL of those movies made me cry too!!!! I love the movies you listed. Which Romeo and Juliet were you thinking of? I know everyone's going to give me flack for this, but I didn't really like the Leo and Claire version. Well, I TRIED to love it. I loved Claire Danes in it. I just love her as an actress. It's just Leo I have problems with. I don't like him for some reason. Please, everyone...don't hate me! The only movie I liked Leo in was "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?"

Cherry:
How could I have forgotten that one? There are sooooooo many movies out there that make me cry even if I've seen them a zillion times!

caninecologne said...

my list of sad movies:

romeo & juliet (the franco zeffirelli version, NOT the one with DiCaprio!)

edward scisorhands

taps

grave of the fireflies

and

atonement

Unknown said...

Canine:
I knew there was a reason I like you so much! LOL! The Franco Zeffirelli version is my ABSOLUTE fave! Whenever I mention Romeo & Juliet, everyone thinks of the DiCaprio one and they have no idea what I'm talking about when I say, "No! The Zeffirelli one!!!"

I remember watching it with some friends when I was in high school. All the boys were moved by some of the love scenes. A young, naked Olivia Hussey on screen and a bunch of teenage boys...You get the picture.

I will be emailing you in a few minutes :)

Cool! I know all of those movies and all of the actors, but I'm seriosly too lazy to google all of the years of release. But I do LOVE Jones Grape soda candy... hee hee. THis makes a good post. I'll have to ponder what I think is the saddest. XO

I love a contest! Although you have listed a couple that would have been in my list, here are a few where I cried (not necessarily sad endings):
1/ Ghost (OMG, bawled my eyes out, contacts fell out too LOL!)
2/ Steel Magnolias
3/ About Last Night - probably because I was having relationship issues;
4/ Romeo & Juliet - Zefferelli version.
5/ Moulin Rouge - maybe something in the notes that the two of them hit, I cried majorly with this one. I was on a flight and my colleague wanted to make sure I was OK!
Great 5, C!

Ed & Jeanne said...

Ok, I can't pass up a movie contest. I'll email shortly. Meanwhile, a saddest movies list:

1. Pokemon: The Movie. I cried all the way through it; mostly because my kids had managed to make me see it with them

2. The Warriors. How much sadder does it get? First they assinated Cryus! I mean, he was the one and only! Then, they killed poor Cleon. Then poor Fox got thrown in front of the train... I cried like a baby!

3. Tess. How can it not be sad. It's long, its a period chick flick, its over artsy, its sub-titled, it depressing at the beginning and goes down from there. I cry to think I actually went to it.

4. Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry. I mean come on, who DIDN'T cry at the end thinking they got away. And to ruin that poor muscle car. So sad!

5. Police Academy 6: City Under Siege. I mean everyone cried at this one. How could you not when you realized that this was the 6th one of these movies and that they might never end! I might have been the beginning of revelations!

Momisodes said...

Oh geez, these are tough.
I am such a crier! I cried rivers for Beaches, and I soaked my entire sweater while watching Ghost in the theaters!

Deb said...

i sent in my answers!! sorry it took me so long...i went out for sushi...yummm.

Uncivil said...

Oh Lawd
I suck at test!!!!
I'm still scared for life by "Old Yeller". That was my sadest movie.
I'll see what me and google can up with in a few days!!LOL!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Oh, bollocks! I don't know any of these. It's all too North American to me. Or shall I say it's all too North American female for me!

Are your female readers going to shoot me for saying that, Chrissy?

Got your e-mail! Take your time :) The contest is open until Monday ;)

t:
Oooooh! All really good choices! I cry every time I watch ET!
BTW, thanks for the compliment...I think!!?! ;)

Ms.Mamma:
I had the feeling you'd know all of the movies. I know, horrible me for making people have to look up the release dates! I needed to make it a little bit of a challenge though! LOL! ;) Hmmm...grape, you say?! :)

Karen:
OMG! I forgot about "About Last Night"!!! Good one! Oh, BTW, you're in the running for the draw. You and a few others have got the correct answers.

VE:
You have also got the correct answers. It looks like I'll have to do a draw and announce the winner next week.
Hahaha! I laughed so hard when I read your saddest movie list! You had me crying as I read what you wrote for Tess and Police Academy 6! LOL!!! Hilarious!

Unknown said...

Sandy:
Same here! It amuses my husband to watch movies with me. He says I "really know how to turn on the waterworks"! LOL! I can't help it!

Deb:
*sigh* You went for SUSHI!?!?!?! Okay, now I'm jealous! I'm going to Montreal in two days (I'll be away for five days) and I am going to have me some sushi when I'm there!!! I don't care if the people I'm with don't want sushi. I'm having sushi! LOL! Okay, that just made me sound super selfish! Really, I'm not!! ;)

Oh, your e-mail hasn't come in. I'll check again later.

Uncivil:
LOL! Jimbo, you crack me up! :) It's not a test! LOL! I should design a contest with you in mind though. What should the next contest be? Name that tune? What kind of breed of dog is this?

Pete:
Yes, you're probably going to get slaughtered for that one! ;) It's a good thing you don't have a blog! LOL! Just kidding! ;)

Calfkeeper said...

Oh, me. I am not a movie buff, so I'm not even going to try to enter. I don't know any of them.

I rarely cry at movies, and the ones I do cry at are not what anyone else would cry at. I will list a few that made me cry, but no one will agree and you may all laugh if you wish. ha ha.

Let's see...

The Lion King

Schindler's List

Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula

Message in a Bottle

The Color Purple

Now everyone knows I am strange. I'd say living on a dairy did it, but all but one of these I saw before I came here.

Autumn's Mom said...

The Lion King always makes me tear up! My favorite cry baby movie is Steel Magnolias. :) Fun contest!

Tracy said...

Prize? Did you say PRIZE???

Okay, I did a little research and here goes:

Terms of Endearment - 1983 - Shirley McLaine, Debra Winger and Jack Nicholson

Beaches - 1988 - Better Midler and Barbara Hershey

Love Story - 1970 - Ali McGraw, Ryan O'Neal, John Marley (Did you ever figure out what they meant by "Love means never having to say you're sorry."?)

The Way we Were - 1973 - Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford

Kramer vs. Kramer - 1979 - Meryl Streep, Dustin Hoffman, Justin Henry

Fun blog! You and your mom really had some good cries together! I always find it very therapeutic!

J said...

So many have come before me with answers, so I won't even try. Besides, what would I do with all of that yummy goodness? Right now I'm sad because neither my local Longs nor Safeway seems to have a Bit O' Honey for me. Sigh. I will have to check out Walgreens next, I guess.

My saddest movies? Hmmmm.

Amistad made me cry like I've never cried before, seeing the folks dumped into the sea like garbage.

Titanic made me cry, but I didn't care AT ALL about the stupid love story. I cried when they pulled back and you saw all of the people frozen in the water. Knowing that part was real got me good.

I'm with Jimmy, Old Yeller was HUGE. Oh why, why did the dog have to die?

Romeo and Juliet, any version. I swear, they could do that story with shadow puppets, and I would cry. I will say that I saw the Claire/Leo version recently, and decided I didn't like it nearly as much as I used to. But still sad.

Nothing makes me cry like The Miracle Worker. When she has her hands in the water, and has her 'ah hah' moment? God, I'm a mess then. A total mess.

Sorry I haven't visited your blog in such a long time. We have been away a lot. I've emailed you my answers and here are my top five. I emailed you my new blog address. It's by invitation only. You are one of the chosen few, Chrissy!

1. The Painted Veil
2. Legends of the Fall
3. A River Runs Through It
4. The Last of the Mohicans
5. Gorillas in the Mist

Jeanna said...

Ahh, too easy, C. But I bet I'm the only one that saw one of them on a first date in high school (so I wasn't wearing my glasses—good thing cuz the guy wasn't much to look at), and another in junior high.
How About:
The Bicycle Thief
Shoah
The Purple Rose of Cairo
Citizen Kane
Titanic
and/or Old Yeller
The Way We Were wasn't sad really, more power to you, Babs! Have you seen Hubbell lately?

Jeanna said...

And yes to Gorillas in the Mist.

Unknown said...

Calf Keeper:
I also cried when I saw The Lion King! I also cried for Bambi, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, The Land Before Time, An American Tail, Lilo and Stitch...sad, huh? ;) Though most of the endings were happy, there were lots of scenes in those animated movies that made me cry!

Autumn's Mom:
Steel Magnolias! Yes, how could I have forgotten about that!?!
Thank you for popping by my blog and commenting! :)

Starshine:
Yes, my mom and I shared a few really good cries! You're right about it being a good release. Sometimes you just need to watch a good tearjerker! ;) On occasion, we'll try to watch a sad movie together. My dad still thinks we're crazy. Mom and I were crying when we watched Memoirs of a Geisha. LOL!

I'll let you guys know the results next week!

Unknown said...

J:
Yes, Old Yeller is definitely one of the best movies! I remember watching it at school and then again with my family. As a kid, I thought it was so terribly unjust for the dog to die. I seriously didn't think I would ever get over it!!!

I remember asking my parents (for WEEKS!!) why such the dog had to die! I was traumatized. I got over it...eventually. It helped me a bit for when I was seven years old and my hamster died. Okay, that's an entirely different post! ;)

Cara:
THANK YOU! That is so sweet! I feel honoured that you have included me in your secret blog! :) I'm debating starting a secret blog too. I'm far too lazy to keep up more than one blog at the moment though! LOL!

Oh! ALL of those movies you listed are among my faves too! If I were to make a Top 10 list, those would be on it!

Jeanna:
Really??? Which movie did you see on that first date? I'm curious!

Great list, Jeanna! I WEEPED over Gorillas in the Mist! I can't believe I forgot to put it on my list!

Jeanna said...

The Way We Were.
If I had to pick one, it would be The Bicycle Thief.
ALL HE WANTED WAS A BIKE TO FEED HIS FAMILY!
I still weep when I see Italians on bikes.

Unknown said...

Jeanna:
I just thought of another weepy Italian movie...Life is Beautiful. Have you seen that one?

Oh, and there was a bicycle in that movie too.

Uncivil said...

"It's not a test!"??????
I beg your pardon!!!Te he he
"Everything is a test" Colin Farrell, The Recruit, 2003

conTest, proTest,Testicals?
How did that last one get in there?

Unknown said...

Uncivil:
HAHAHA! You are too funny!!! :) How did that last one get in there?

Heidi said...

Oh Steel Magnolias is the classic tear-jerker. I cry every time I watch. E-VE-RY TIME.

I don't want to think about sad movies, I'll get sad. I can't afford to get sad now that I'm back up and running.

Deb said...

i sent it again...hope you got it!

Unknown said...

CK:
Hey, girlfriend! :) Yeah, Steel Magnolias gets me every time!

I think it was more the memories of watching those movies with my mom and the times we spend bonding as mother and daughter that triggered this post...rather than the sadness of the movies.

Glad you're in good spirits. Bet you're counting down the days until your "CK's Japan Tour, 2008"!!! You're going to have a blast! I am soooooo jealous! ;) XOXO

Deb:
I checked again and there was no e-mail :( Grrrrrrrr! LOL! I even checked the junk box but there's nothing in there either. I'll try to figure it out.

Anonymous said...

Oh, I love sad movies. It's sad when you just want to come home and watch a sad movie so you can ball your eyes out! My favorites are

Life is Beautiful; so sad and so hopeful

Ma Vie en Rose: I was laughing one minute and crying the next; so heartbreaking to see one struggle with something they can't change...

To Live: the Chinese film about a struggling family

House of Sand and Fog: sad for everyone, a film where you don't really end up rooting for anyone

Bridges Over Madison County: their last scene together just broke my heart

Dang it! Now I wanna go curl up in the corner and cry!

Unknown said...

Lotus:
I'm going to have to check out that Chinese movie :)

There are so many great movies out there...and so many crappy ones! I seem to like most movies that critics hate and hate movies that most critics love! LOL!

Jeanna said...

Hey C., yeah I really enjoyed it at the time, but not sure it holds up. Maybe. Haven't seen La Vie en Rose yet, but plan to. Bridges was a heartbreaker too. And wasn't she Italian?

Row and Sow and Mow and Hoe and said...

Oh my goodness - I know them all very well; they were the BEST movies, and I also cried my eyes out watching them (I could watch them 5 times and STILL cry again!) Another one that really got to me was "A River Runs Through It".

LOL on Jimmy's Old Yeller!

Unknown said...

Jeanna:
I arrived in Montreal around 3 PM (a 9 hr drive), spent time with my grandma and other family members, watched a Montreal Canadiens game (so upset Montreal lost against Boston).

I was thinking of other movies that made me weep. First Knight was and A River Runs Through It really made me cry.

Hey, I told myself since I'm out of town for the weekend that I would lay off the internet for a few days. Hmmmph! Not working! I just can't keep away from the blog! I'll see if I can refrain. LOL!

rowing and sowing:
Same here! I'm exactly like you with the being able to watch certain movies time after time and still always cry watching them!

Jimmy makes me laugh all the time too! He's right though...WHY, oh why did the dog have to die?!?!?!

That was such a traumatic movie for me!
:)

Uncivil said...

OK.....I entered your test....er contest.
I have to admit that I cheated. I copied off of Starshine's paper!!!!LOL!!!!!
But I entered!!!!
Just send me the maple syrup if I win the draw!!!!!!!!!LOL!!!! and the candy to Starshine!!!!!

Hugs to you and your granny!!!!

Uncivil said...

Oh wow!!!! I was watching "Man On Fire" 2004 with Denzel Washington & Dakota Fanning.
I forgot how emotional this movie gets me? And thought of this post!
I get amazed at how well they played their parts and make you believe it's all real!
