In between teaching, dividing my time amongst my students, my husband, and my house, I come over to help mom with the rooms at our little inn. It's the same routine...she does the bathroom, I do the beds, bookings, etc. It's a busy life and not an easy one. My poor garden is suffering from neglect. What began as a dream garden with wonderful vegetables to boast, has become a nightmare due to lack of time to maintain it. My corn is coming along well, and so are the potatoes and tomatoes, but my poor snow peas and beans aren't yielding as much as I'd wanted. I can't even find my cucumbers and squash amidst all the weeds! The raspberries and currants are so plentiful this year that I can't even pick them fast enough! I managed to get about 12 containers of each into my freezer, but the birds are having a field day now because I am too busy to harvest all the time. Anyway, I'll know for next year not to get too ambitious and not have a garden if I have too many other things to do.
What grows in your garden? And how do you keep it from becoming invaded by weeds??? We started off way ahead of the game- we sprayed liquid manure, tilled, used the hoe...everything was perfect...until I got busy with students and the inn.

My SIL (J's sister) and my MIL, as well as another friend here on the island have all told me that I need to mulch next year!!! They say I HAVE TO collect all the grass clippings and cover around the plants so the weeds won't grow as much.
Another guy here swears by his trusty black plastic sheets that he puts down over top of his garden. He tells me he never weeds or waters his garden (moisture gets trapped underneath and weeds don't grow because of the plastic). The only thing I'm worried about is possible fungi. Plus, my garden is WAY too big to cover in plastic sheets! He has a smaller garden- about the length and width of 5 vans (extended version), whereas mine is more like 20!!! Don't ask me why I just measured in vans- I just thought some people may not know metric or whatever..plus everyone knows how big a van is, right? LOL
re: plastic sheets- my friend lays the sheets on top of the soil and then puts holes where he plants the veggies so that only the plants with veggies can get through and nothing else.
i have the weed problem too in our garden...i have given up trying to control it. We have only a few tomatoes growing from the 6 plants i planted and NO zucchini to show for all the seeds i put down (darn squirrels!)
Maybe next year I'll have more time to pay attention to the garden :)
Sure wish we had the space (and time) to get a garden going but it's still in the long term planning stages I'm afraid. Maybe some type of work/expense/crop sharing plan for next summer! :-)
LOL Dina, I've given up trying to control the weeds in my garden too. I'll be smarter next year and try to be more organized. It's just been way too much to try to keep up with.
