"I See Dead People"

Okay, just typing that totally freaked me out. Now I've got the goosebumps and can't get that kid's face out of my head. You know. That kid. The one from the movie Sixth Sense.

I don't want to creep you out, but I here's a random fact about me.

I do believe that some people have a sixth sense. I used to think that this was just me being superstitious, as Filipinos often are. Seriously, have you never heard a Filipina grandmother tell stories about ghosts? It's a very large part of our culture.

I shouldn't really say that I see ghosts. There's a lot more to it than that.

The earliest memory I have of this kind of strange occurrence was when I was just a little girl.  My grandfather on my paternal side died when I was maybe three years old or so.  My parents never said anything to my brother or me, because we were so young and they didn't think we'd understand.  Dad went to the funeral in Trinidad without us. Nothing was explained.

One evening, my Mom was getting us dressed after our bath and I pointed to the corner of the room and said, "Look, Mama! It's Grandpa, and he's smiling at me!"

Mom was so freaked out. She told me years later (when I was a teenager) that I scared her.

The extra-sensory powers, if you will, were heightened when I turned 13. I was able to do "odd" things like hold someone's hand and accurately tell them what they were thinking or "guess" which number, shape, colour they were thinking of. I was able to accurately depict things that would happen or retell things that happened in the past that no one had ever told me about. These things happened too frequently for them to be pure chance.

When I was in elementary school, my middle brother and I used to go home together after school (back when latch-key kids weren't so much frowned upon). Our baby brother went to my grandparents' house while my parents were at work and they'd pick him up on their way home every evening. My grandparents lived maybe fifteen minutes away by car and you had to cross a bridge to get to their place.

One afternoon, I distinctly heard my baby brother crying. It was more like screaming in pain. How could it be possible that I could hear my brother crying if he was fifteen minutes away by car? The cry sounded as though it were coming from right next to me!

Within minutes, I received a call from my grandmother. My little brother was running and had hit his head on concrete and split his head open.

How uncanny was that?

Then there were other times like when my friend from college called me out of the blue and I told her, "Hey! It's so weird that you called me! I just had a dream about you and [insert name of friend's boyfriend] were getting married!"

I went on to describe to her the wedding. It was so vivid in my dream. I was able to describe to her the wedding dress, flowers, decor, the wedding, the guests...and, all with accuracy. She was quiet and finally said, "Oh, my gosh. I'm calling to tell you that [boyfriend] and I are getting married, and you just described what I want the wedding to be like!"

Sure enough, when I attended the wedding, it was just as I had envisioned it to be.

Once, when I was living and working in Japan in my early-twenties, I was riding my bike back to my apartment at night.  For some reason, something made me look beside me, and I saw an old man riding his bike beside me. He smelled just like my grandfather's cologne. He smiled at me. It was my grandfather.  I blinked, looked again, and the old man was gone.  The thing is, my grandfather had died three months before that incident.

I wasn't really creeped out, because I knew it was my grandfather. I didn't have a bad feeling at all.

I did get scared during my trip to the Philippines last May. My grandmother was dying and I went there to spend her last few weeks with her and to bring my daughter so she could see one of her great-grandchildren one last time.

I had fallen asleep on the couch one afternoon and everyone was at the hospital. I woke up because I felt someone staring at me. It was my aunt who had died a few years prior. She was standing outside, looking in through the iron-clad door. I pinched myself several times to make sure I wasn't dreaming.

Things like this happen to me every now and then.  It used to really scare me when I was younger because I didn't understand it.  I still don't really understand it, but I know that it's something passed down from female to female on my mother's side. My grandmother's relatives had this and so did my grandmother and my mom.

Do you believe in a sixth sense? Has anything "out of the ordinary" happened to you before?

I've got all sorts of stories to share if you want to hear! They might scare the socks off of you though!

This post was inspired by a Twitter conversation I had with my friend, Carol. She shares similar experiences here.

Thanks for sharing this, Christine! I have only met 2 other friends that share this similar "sixth sense".

It's so crazy that we both had our first visits from our grandfathers!

I have never been able to see into the future or have any premonitions or anything of that sort just the sensitivity but my intuition is extremely higher than the average woman (this I know from many experiences).

I've learned to embrace this now although there are moments when I still get scared.
It helps that I hold a faith in a higher power as well that helps me when I'm feeling scared. And it also helps to know that there is more to this life we're living.
Reassurance that our lived ones are in better places. <3

Hi C - You're 6th sense is stronger than my brother's. I remember you telling me a few of your stories on one of my posts ("Ghost Orbs") way back when about some incident in Japan...I didn't know about the other stuff!

Well, I don't have a 6th sense, but my brother seems to attract it. I distinctly remember one time when my brother and I were teens. My bro was outside raking leaves. I was in the house. I heard talking to someone and I looked out the window. It was our "Uncle" Freddie (not really our uncle, but a friend of my parents). He was on his bike and would usually be seen riding his bike in the neighborhood. Anyways, he waved at us and said, "Tell your dad I said 'Hi'."

Later on at the dinner table, we told our dad that we "saw" Uncle Freddie. He was very quiet. Then he said, "Your Uncle Freddie died (xxxx) days ago."!!!!!

Wuttttt!!!!!!

I swear to God that I saw him too. He looked so real.

Another incident was when Bert and his brother were deciding what watch their father should wear in his casket (he passed away in 2006). Bert asked his brother the time he died so he could set the watch to it. Bert then picked out their dad's favorite watch without looking at the time. His bro said, "10:53 am". Bert said, "Oh, it's 10:53 right now" (the actual time) AND it was also 10:53 ON THE WATCH WHICH WASN'T WORKING!!!! The Battery had died long ago!

Chills.

Bert does not lie about stuff like this.

There are more stories involving my brother and also my dad but this is already a long comment.

Thanks for sharing your stories C.

I have had dreams where people were pregnant, and told them only to find out that they had just done a test and had it positive.

My Mum once saw my grandma walking through our house, about 2 weeks after she'd died on the other side of the Atlantic.

I'll tell you more stories when I see you next summer.

I'm a firm believer in a 6th sense. Seems reasonable when you consider how little of our brains we use in everyday life.

Oh my gosh! I totally believe it! Can't wait to hear more of your stories!!

Christine, where do I begin?
This post is so real to me because I AM the boy in the movie 6th Sense. When I was little (around 2ish) my mother told me that I would scream when I saw photos of Jesus. My grandmother was a devout Catholic and had them spread all over her home...when I would see them I would turn them around or simply cry until someone removed them. Then, by the age of 3 I stared engaging in 'weird' behaviour.

The time I remember the most is when I went to use the potty in an bathroom that did not posses a lock, and began to scream and say 'he's getting me, he's getting me' out loud for about 15 minutes. My mother says that from under the door she could see me crawled up in a ball crying on the floor. When the door opened I was covered in scratches and all I could say was that the man was gone and he would not ever come back...freaky eh?

Other times I would just space out and then come back telling my parents about events that would happen in the future, and they always did come true.

I used to see people in coffins, describe strange deaths that happened in the family and stuff like that when I was little. Especially when we passed cemeteries. It is strange, but I always felt a sense of calm when I did though.

Apparently, in my family it is said that the first born (me) always has these visions and are very in tuned with the after world.

One time, as a teen I had a lot of visions of a Native man wearing a headress in our newly built home. He would visit in my room then smile and walk down the hall. We later found out our house was built near a burial ground.

Now, as an adult I tend to tap into this 'gift' only when I need it most. When my grandmother passed, I really needed the closure at the time, so I made sure her path was clear by embracing my alter-power. I had to see her once last time, and it was worth it.

I really have adapted to living with these visions, since changing my outlook on the after world and what happens next...but I do see a lot of these similarities in my oldest boy.

Okay, now I also believe in computer ghosts. They deleted my comment even though I got the "Thank you for your comment" message. I wrote about what my son has "seen", but not typing it all out again, sorry!
