Throwback Thursday #24

This week's Throwback Thursday installment brings us back to 1992-1993.

1993 marked a very important year in my young adolescent life. It was the year I graduated from high school. It was an exciting year, yet at the same time it marked an end to many things. I know it was supposed to be a year of new beginnings, since we were on our way to college and then after that we were to go on to university. For me it signified an end of freedom. Long gone would be the days of just having fun with friends. College was serious business (I later found out that college was not all work and no play though). Many of my friends would be going to different colleges than the one I applied to. They called my college the "West Island Country Club". It wasn't really like that. I can think of some other places that were snobbier! In fact, I don't think my college was snooty at all!

One of our class trips in my last year of high school was a trip to Stratford, Ontario. I can't remember if we took the train or chartered a bus from Montreal.

I had traveled extensively around the globe and often felt guilty of not having visited more places in my own country. Stratford is one of my favourite places in Canada. Stratford is such a beautiful, quaint place. As you may have guessed, it was named after Stratford-upon-Avon, England.
These Throwback Thursday photos are from the time my friends and I went to Stratford for the Shakespeare Festival. The plays were not limited to only the works of Shakespeare. We also had the chance of seeing Gilbert and Sullivan's HMS Pinafore. I'm a huge G&S fan, so this was such a treat!
The Shakespeare plays we saw were The Tempest, Romeo and Juliet and I can't remember if the last one we saw was Hamlet or Macbeth! It was so long ago!
Here we are in a restaurant (I can't remember the name) in downtown Stratford. It was here that we sat almost next to the late Mordecai Richler, who was also in Stratford to see a few plays! I wish I had mustered up the courage to ask him for his autograph! I was starstruck! I really enjoyed reading The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, Soloman Gursky Was Here, Joshua Then and Now, and the Jacob Two-Two books.

I didn't get his autograph because I thought I'd let the man enjoy his meal without a bunch of groupies harassing him.

This last photo is my high school grad photo. Icky! I've never liked this photo! The big hair, fire engine red lipstick and the ungroomed eyebrows...What were we thinking back then? ;p
**I couldn't find a video for production of HMS Pinafore that we saw in Stratford. Instead, I've found one on YouTube for you to view.**

My blog friend Candy grew up in Stratford. She often mentions the town and posts pictures of it - must be a beautiful place.

Funny - we have a Stratford in NZ also - a result of our shared English colonization.

That was well funny indeed. Before you go calling me a right puffter, I must say that I enjoyed The Pirates of Penzance better than H.M.S. Pinafore. Are you a fan of The Mikado as well?

Wow! A Stratford in NZ too!

Pete:
Okay, I have nooooooo idea what you just said! LOL! ;) What's a puffter? Nevermind. I'm going to Google it.

I LOVE the Mikado AND Pirates!!! LOVE them!

LOL! For a minute, I thought you were going to say "from snooty to floozy"! LOL! I can live with "schmooze" though! ;)

How many people do you think could recognize Mordecai Richler. How did you? That stage is beautiful, is it permanent or do they tear it down for different shows?
My college was known for having so many bars on a few blocks they wanted to make it illegal.

I just ran across my graduation photo today. Why did they put us in white? Who looks good in so much white? Well I guess brides do but other than them. :)

Ah graduation photos. I'll post one of mine sometime. Trust me, it will put your "ungroomed" eyebrows to shame.

The photo of is of the Festival Theatre. Stratford has several other theatres. We saw a few plays at the Avon Theatre and the Tom Patterson Theatre as well.

I have to say that the Festival is my favourite theatre because the design of the stage is modeled after the Elizabethan thrust stage. The stage is permanent, but the balcony is moveable.

I'll stop now before I bore you to death! LOL!

Lisa Marie:
I know! I don't know if I'm a fan of the white grad robe though. The funny thing is that at my high school, the girls wore white robes and the guys wore black! Why???

Rachie:
Oh, you crack me up! :) When I look back at my grad photos (well, at my entire years in high school, actually!) I have to cringe. Why on earth were "the Brooke Shields" eyebrows in back then? Remember when "bushy", natural, thick eyebrows were in? I wish groomed eyebrows were in back then. Now I'm super conscious about my eyebrows. They must be properly tweezed, waxed, trimmed...whatever. I know...I'm a freak! ;p

None of us like the way we looked ten years (or more) ago. We were so stylish then, we thought, and although we are not fashion slaves, the look of last decade does embarrass us today.

But I think you look cute in the picture.

Hey girlfriend, I could talk thrust stages all day. Don't get me started on the rope and pulley system. That's much easier for the techs, not to have to tear down when there's more than one show running. It looks a lot like the Shakespearean theatre just west of here.

I love Stratford, C! When I was working out of the home, we had a few team building sessions there and it was so much fun. But Stratford holds a special place in my heart; I was there when I got the news on the phone from the dr's that I was pregnant with G.

Actually, one of the actors of the new CBC series The Border, Graham Abby, did a reading for us at one o the sessions...swoon!!! I had a feeling he might make it onto TV at some point.
Cute throwbacks, you're such a doll in those shots!

Jan:
So true! However, the photos of the crimped and permed hair and the bright blue eyeliner and mascara will never be posted! What were we thinking back then? LOL! ;)

Jeanna:
Really? Oh, and how cool is it that you've got a Shakespearean theatre near you?
I've got family in cheese country that I've never visited. Hmmmmm...

Karen:
That is SO cool!!! I love how Stratford is a special place for you too! That is so neat about getting news of Baby G while over there!

Ooooh! Graham Abby! Do you watch The Border? Hubby's seen two episodes and says it's interesting.

The last time I went to Stratford, Jonathan Crombie (the guy who played Gilbert Blythe in Anne of Green Gables) played Guildenstern in Hamlet. We were in the front row ...so close that we could almost touch him! We didn't though. That would have been...uhhh...kind of stalker-ish! He was soooo dreamy!
