NOT BRUSSEL SPROUTS!!!!!

I just wanted to share with you a funny interaction that took place at dinner.

Scene: a cozy, warm dining room
Enter Wifey. Wifey smiles as she places a dinner plate in front of Hubby. Hubby looks at the spinach and corn soup, roasted sweet potato fries and...brussel sprouts.

Hubby:
Not brussel sprouts!?!?!
Wifey:
(chuckles) Eat them! They're good for you!
Hubby:
But, I don't like brussel sprouts!
Wifey:
Seriously, they taste really good! They're good for you!
Hubby:
Hmph! Three or four would be somewhat okay, but NINE???

My dear Hubby makes me laugh :) He is so funny. For a second, I could envision sitting across the table from a three or four year old, refusing to eat his brussel sprouts!

The conversation didn't stop there!
Wifey: (laughs a hearty laugh) I guess some butter would make it taste more flavourful.
Hubby:
No. It would need more than butter to make it taste good. Can't you at least put cheese on it???

I wasn't expecting that reaction from him. He really made me laugh so hard! I won't even go into talking about how he has been saying that his ribs are poking out and how he has lost 5 lbs in the past 4 days! LOL! It's true though. Not about the ribs part, but he has dropped 5 lbs in 4 days...which was not my intention at all. I just wanted us to cleanse our systems and decrease the level of toxins in our bloodstreams.

Anyway, poor brussel sprouts! They are so often misunderstood! Chock-full of nutrients, brussel sprouts are still pretty low on everyone's list of preferred veggies. Why, oh why do people hate the lonely 'ol brussel sprout? Brussel sprouts contain lots of vitamin C, vitamin K, potassium, folate, beta carotene and fibre. Okay, I did read that according to Canada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating, the recommended serving of brussel sprouts is 4. (Sorry, Hubby! My bad!)

I've received quite a number of e-mail messages from readers in the past few days, asking about what we've been eating while on detox. I've found this week to be not so difficult, but Hubby's been dreaming of chocolate cake! He's also been dreaming of cheese...and lots of it! He wants cheese and MEAT! Actually, he said "cheese and meat TOGETHER"! (Lasagna, a bacon cheeseburger, tacos, etc) Two more days of detox left...I know he can do it!

The above photos are of supper and dessert a few nights ago. Don't be fooled by Hubby's comments! :) It hasn't been that hard! We had a wonderful vegetarian chili one night (thank goodness for slowcookers!) and baked salmon with braised veggies another night. Tomorrow there will be grilled chicken and an avocado salad.

If any of you reading this have any meetings with Hubby this weekend, please don't feel sorry for him. Ignore the puppy dog eyes as he looks longingly at your pizza and dessert plate. He is not deprived :)

*NOTE* I just discovered that it's not "brussel sprouts". It's "Brussels sprouts"! The small cabbage-like vegetable is named after the capital of Belgium--Brussels! The English teacher in me wants to say "Brussel sprouts" since it's a countable noun. However, since it's named after the proper noun, "Brussels", it should be "Brussels sprouts". Oh well! Whatever!

It wasn't 9 but 12 sprouts!!!!! I don't mind 4 or 5 but the taste wears off after that many plain(not butter or even cheese). I am getting too weak to type any more.

Love you C!!

I had no idea it was named after the city. Ian will be so excited because he's actually going there later this year...and he LOVES Brussels sprouts, I kid you not! As do I. We had a craving for them on the weekend and ate them steamed and plain. Maybe we're just weird. Our kids won't go anywhere near them!
Farmer john, you are a kook--no wonder C loves you so!!!

bwahahahahaha ! shit chris! poor john! that was a funny post and a funny comment from john. we don't like brussel sprouts in this house- come to think of it we don't really like vegetables period - unless it comes in the form of potatos or corn!

Pete:
LOL! You said 'Brussels sprouts'!

Hubby:
Hahaha!!! Oh my goodness, Hubby! You are too funny! :) "I am getting too weak to type"!

Yes, you're right! There were twelve!!! Sorries! Oh, admit it...You love them! ;)

Karen:
I think I must be weird too, because I really, really love Brussels sprouts! I keep wanting to say 'brussel' sprouts though!

I like mine the same way you and Ian like them. Sometimes I like a little salt & black pepper, and maybe just a touch of butter. I usually just like them steamed and nekkid! LOL!

Hubby is kooky, isn't he? :)

HM:
I have a friend who says that he's 'allergic' to vegetables...except the ones that come in the form of corn and potatoes! LOL! The only 'vegetable' I saw him eat was potatoes...mashed, baked, fried, French fried, etc. He avoided anything that was the colour green. Those were especially yucky for him. Needless to say, he had problems pooping! LOL! I know, I know. Too much information! I'm just sayin' that eating veggies is "good for the constitution". Hmmm...except for corn. You don't want me to get into talking about corn poop though. ;p

i'm not a fan of brussels sprouts either, but maybe it was the way my mom prepared them. they always tasted bitter and smelled like a bad cabbage fart. maybe as an adult, I might like them again, but that may depend on the preparation.

Brussels references:
the song, "land down under" by men at work

"Buying bread from a man in Brussels...He was six foot four and full of muscles"

and action star Jean Claude Van Damme's nickname, the Muscles from Brussels

Mmm, I like em! But I'm with your hubby. I cut them half, toss in olive oil and roast in a heavy pan. Then salt & pepper and a healthy shaving of Parmesan cheese (the real stuff is heaven but the Kraft stuff is good too!)

I just tried roasted broccoli and cauliflower in the oven and man, it's awesome that way!

You guys are so great for doing this. I tried and failed at the detox...

Christine, how could you do this to John?? Look at him, I am surprised he was able to write a coherent sentence after enduring that ordeal. Actually, I think that he should be in the Guiness World Book of Records or something for eating that many Brussels sprouts and surviving.

Only a couple of days left John, you can do it!!

Christine, if I ever get time to get up to the island, I can eat one or two Brussels sprouts, and that is it. And even that is with weird faces and shouts of terror.

Have a great day today!
Ellie :o)

Not a brussel sprout fan either but the photos look great. Sounds healthy. Lots of color! Poor John! One more day to go!

John can totally do a commercial for cheese. LOL

Uncivil said...

I've always been politically incorrect and called them Brussel Sprouts!
So I will refer to them as B.S. in this comment!!LOL!!!

I love cabbage, but I don't care too much for B.S.

Pass the broccoli, but please no B.S. for me !!!!LOL!!!!

They cause gas too....don't they???

Uncivil said...

Oh, and the last two food pics look absolutely delicious!!!!

Canine:
I absolutely HATED brussel sprouts when I was a kid. I remember crying every time my mom cooked them. I think it was only until I was in my late 20's that I actually started liking them.

I love that Men at Work song! Catchy tune! Oh, funny you mentioned "The Muscles from Brussels"! Baby Bro did a few scenes in Jean-Claude Van Damme's directorial debut, The Quest. Unfortunately all the orphanage scenes that Baby Bro appeared in were left the cutting room floor. He did say that JCVD is a really nice and fun guy to work with. Oh, what's even funnier is that The Quest was on TV last night!

Lotus:
Thanks! It has been quite the trial! Oh, and thanks for the cooking tip! I think I'll try that next time! :)

Ellie:
LOL! You are too funny! :) Have a great weekend with your hubby and the kids! Anything big planned for the weekend?

Hubby says photo #2 is the best. He's not a fan of baked sweet potato. I just love sweet potato though! He's not a squash fan either, but butternut squash is my favourite! He's pretty good and eats most veggies though. He prefers raws veggies.

CK:
LOL! That's so true! He could totally do a cheese commercial! Hahaha! I can almost see it now!

Uncivil:
Brussels sprouts = BS!!! I LOVE that! You are too funny!

Suzanne:
Those wedding bouquets were really pretty! You did a great job! Everything looked absolutely perfect.

You can cook for me anytime, but leave the nasty sprouts at home. Bleccchhh. Dinner looks delish.

Man on detox.... looses weight
Woman on detox.... looses boobs

I couldn't ever get my hubs to eat anything green unless it's a sour apple jolly rancher, so for him to only complain about the brussels spouts isn't so bad. I made homemade cheese enchlada's and my hubs complained because the scallions were too 'chunky' and in there all together. When I make lasagna etc,. i have to puree peas or canned carrots and put them in the sauce along with some flax and wheat germ... otherwise he'd always only eat meat and carbs. bah.. and yours is crabby about brussels sprouts!

Rick Rockhill said...

C- I LOVE Brussels sprouts but my other half hates them too, so I only have them when I go out to dinner someewhere. oh well.

I love brussel sprouts. Either boil them and fry them in garlic and oilve oil or roast them!!

Calfkeeper said...

I love Brussels sprouts! Yum...they look really good.

Give them to him more often; he'll get used to them!

hahahaha...

The photo of the fruit salad is gorgeous. And let your hubby whine, so long as he's getting cleansed.

Brussels sprouts are terrific when sauteed with soy sauce!

Jeanna said...

Soy sauce? Really? I might try that and see what happens. That's fairly healthy, right?

Unknown said...

Clem:
So, when are you coming over for dinner? ;)

Christine:
So true about men losing weight and women losing "boob"! Mmmmm...Cheese enchiladas! That sounds good!!!

Unknown said...

Rick:
That's kind of like my mom...except with liver and onions and not brussel sprouts. I always wondered why she always orders liver and onions when she goes out for a meal. It just seems like something she can have at home. I found out that she does that because my dad's not a fan and she can only have liver and onions when she's out. Now, that's another thing that irked me when I was a kid. Liver and brussel sprouts were pretty much the only things I wouldn't touch when I was a kid. That and cooked carrots. I don't know why.

Mrs. Mogul:
Wow! That sounds good! I think I'll have to try that! Olive oil and garlic! Mmmm! Maybe Hubby won't notice the brussel sprouts! :)

Unknown said...

calf keeper:
HAHA! That might actually work! Hubby wasn't much of a squash fan and he didn't really like canteloupe before...and now he likes them. I kept giving him those two foods because they're my favourites...now he likes them. Maybe the same will happen with brussel sprouts? LOL!

Jocelyn:
Soy sauce? I would have never thought of that! I've got to try that! Thanks! :)

Unknown said...

Jeanna:
I'm going to try the soy sauce and brussel sprout recipe too. BTW, I Clem is HILARIOUS! (So are you!)

PinksandBluesGirls said...

You know, I don't think I've ever even tried Brussels Sprouts, so I can't take either one of your sides on this one!! :)

Those pictures of your dinner and dessert actually look scrumptious! I wish I could put together a meal like you can, C! Detoxing would be a cinch!

xo,
Jane

Hubby is sooooooooooo glad detox is over. I'm really proud of him. 7 days of no caffeine, sugar, salt, wheat, dairy, red meat, processed/preserved food...and he's still alive. He's 6 lbs lighter though! I only dropped 3 lbs, but for not intending to drop anything, that was a pleasant surprise! LOL!

LOL - BS are not my favourite either.
I love the fruit salad picture.I could eat that every day.
I love vegies too - I am starting my own vegie garden - just a few things to encourage my boys to be good vegie eaters.
Thanks for visiting me and your warm comments as always.

Jeanna said...

Three pounds is perfect. That's the kind of weight loss that stays off. Hey, are you driving yet?

Baby Amore:
:) Your little ones are adorable and you've got a great blog!

Jeanna:
Yes...I've been reluctant, but life must go on and if I want to get any work done, I have to get behind the wheel again. Hmph! I have been taking Chance with me for the ride though. Back's still sore, but we've got one of those inversion tables at our house. It feels good to be able to 'hang' upside down for a few minutes.
