Engrish...and an award!
I was on MSN with one of my ESL students in Japan last night. He needed help with an essay. Don't worry, I've already asked my student if I could blog about this and he thought it would be pretty funny!
I had just finished editing his essay and we were just chatting about how he was doing with school, work, life, etc.
Me: What's new where you are?
Hiroyuki: I was played a tennis last day.
Me: Oh! You played tennis yesterday? I didn't know you play tennis!
Hiro: Oh. Yeah. I played tennis yesterday. I've played tennis for I was teenager.
Me: That's great! I love tennis. Did you win?
Hiro: No. Shunsuke kicked me inside my @$$!!!
Me: (chuckling) Oh! He "kicked your @$$".
Hiro: I'm sorry. I mistaked.
Me: It's easy to mix things up sometimes. English idioms, slang, colloquialisms and phrasal verbs aren't always easy.
Hiro: Thank you for your helping. Oh! I mean thank you for your help!
I don't usually teach slang to my ESL students, but they often feel it is necessary (especially when they are conversing with other English speakers in "every day English" or when they're watching a movie or TV show). I forwarded this to Hiroyuki:
kick @$$
verb (inf=to kick @$$, kicks @$$, kicking @$$, kicked @$$, kicked @$$)
Me? A kick @$$ blogger??? Autumn's Mom thinks so! :) Thank you, Autumn's Mom! I think you're pretty awesome yourself! For those of you who haven't checked her out yet, AM is one of the coolest chiquitas on the net. She's a great mom and she has an amazing sense of humour. She also recently got married to the man of her dreams.
I am supposed to share this award with 5 bloggers I think are kick @$$ too. Since AM already tagged J, Ms.Mamma, and Starshine, I guess I can't pass on the award to them. So many great blogs and great bloggers out there! It's tough to choose just 5!
How could I not pass this award onto Jeanna?! She has a wicked sense of humour. Her posts always crack me up. She is witty beyond compare. She also posts the most amazing photos of...CANDY!!! Jeanna's also got a heart of gold. I love this gal!
Uncivil is another kick @$$ blogger! Though he hasn't been posting much these days, his posts and comments always make me laugh. He wants you to think that he is uncivil, but he really is a big softy! xo
Although I'm not sure if Diesel digs the awards thing, I'm passing this onto him. Diesel is quite possibly one of the funniest people you'll ever read. Always funny, and often controversial to some (errr...to those who get offended easily, that is! I recall one reader getting upset with the idea of grown-ups paying teenagers to dig trenches for work. Isn't that what working is though? You do the work and people pay you!), Diesel's blog is worth checking out. Now, since I'm talking about the man himself...Diesel also has a book out. Check it out!
Don Mills Diva always writes a great post. She is another kick @$$ blogger. She's a mom, she's a wife, she's a writer, she's a diva...and she is super cool and super savvy. I really enjoy Don Mills Diva's posts. She has a gift for writing. Go ahead and see for yourself!
KarenMEG is another really cool gal. If you think she's awesome in the blog world, then she'll knock your socks off IRL! She is a firecracker! She's cool, hip, and really, really funny! I love this gal!

City girl moves to the country, falls in love, and marries a farmer. She tries to incorporate her city ways with her new country lifestyle and blogs to keep in touch with friends, family & students who live far, far away :) Can this city girl go country? Watch as she learns all sorts of exciting things about life on the farm and in a small rural community. *UPDATE* We are now parents! Our baby girl was born on Nov. 11, 2008 (at 28 weeks gestation- 12 weeks premature, but she's quite the trooper)!!!

This was a great story, C, and absolutely hilarious that you sent that definition to your student. And to top it off, that particular award!!! I guess all the stars aligned!
You're just awesome, a totally kick-ass blogger; thanks for the wonderful words and for passing this one along.
I'm blushing ;)xoxo
Aww shucks!
I'm honoured by the award and gratified that people all over the world are learning the true meaning of kicking ass!
BTW I am going to meet Karenm IRL hopefully in the next month or so - can't wait!
Well ain't you sweet.
Chrissy you complete me!
So do you like my baby name suggestion?
It is nice to get pointed to other blogs, think I'll check them out, after all didn't I meet you and Jimbo through MM? Doesn't that Irish punk photo remind you of her for some reason?
Jimbo should wear a Brewers shirt into a Cub's bar, then he'd find out what uncivil really means. He's just a teddy bear isn't he?
C you're so sweet. It's beena long time since anyone considered me kick a$$.
I'm really somewhere between slack a$$ and Old a$$!!!!
"Me Lub you long time"!!!!
that is a kick@$$ award! I am going to check out those blogs you like. If you like them, then they must be good. :)
Karen:
Wasn't it a funny story? I try really hard not to laugh when my students say things like that, but it was too cute!
Awww! Thanks! You're awesome! Can't wait for my next trip to TO. I can't wait to see you and the girls! Our last visit was way too short!!!
DMD:
;)
Awwww!!! You and Karen are meeting up next month? I'm on my way to Montreal for my 15 year high school reunion. If I end up in TO, we should all meet up!
Jeanna:
I try ;)
LOVE the baby name! I'll keep it in mind! ;)
Yes, you did meet Jimbo and yours truly via the lovely, wonderful and talented Ms.Mamma! Gotta love the little communities one becomes part of in the blog world, eh? I <3 you, Jimbo and Ms.M! xoxo
Jimmy:
Aww shucks! Well, you are kick @$$, my friend! :) LOL! Oooh, boy! You are too funny! You had me laughing at "Me Lub you long time". Right back at ya! ;)
Deb:
Well, you are a kick @$$ gal too! I was only supposed to pass on the award to 5 people, but you are right up there, amiga! XOXO
Yay! So glad you had fun with this :) What a great story to go along with it.
xoxo
Hahah, I couldn't help chuckle when I read your title :)
How awesome are you to send your students urban english slang def's? You are the coolest ;)
Dang, I was thinking of awarding both Uncivil AND KarenMEG. Oh well. There are a lot of kick ass bloggers out there!
Autumn's Mom:
Tee hee! Yes, t'was fun :) The story was fitting too, no? LOL! Gotta love my students! Barrels of laughs.
Sandy:
LOL! I try not to teach my ESL students slang, but then they come up to me with the oddest questions, like "What does Are you going to bone her mean?"! GAH! They pick up a lot of English by hanging out in bars or watching TV and movies. The worst thing they've asked me was the proper usage of the F-word! I think I wrote an F-word post a while ago.
Gah!
Thanks, C! I appreciate your support!
LOL C!
Congrats!!
And I lurve it when you post blog links. It adds to my must reads!!
