Mama Always Said...

"Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get". Okay, my mom never said that. That was Forrest Gump's mom. My mom always said that "a woman should always look her best". My mom and my grandma are always so well put together. You won't find either of them without make-up or their hair done.

My mom always says that a woman should always look her best because you never know who you will run into. "C, do not leave the house without putting on make-up!" or "C, you really need to do something about your hair!" or "You look terrible without make-up". She's right though. I do look exhausted like I was hit by a bus (or a truck) when I don't have make-up on.

Now that I've had this adorable little hatchling,
I see more and more what my mom means about not knowing who you will run into. Now that I live in the country, people just pop in to say hello (without any notice). It's nice and I love that small town community feel, but it's hard to stay in your pyjamas with a nursing baby when you want to have a pj day and not feel like a slob in front of others. It's not like I'm "letting myself go". Really. It isn't. I still brush my teeth and brush my hair. I do slap on some lip gloss and if I'm going out, I'll put on some eyeliner and mascara. I'm not making any excuses. I know lots of moms out there look totally glam AND take care of their babies, husbands, and houses. Fancy Pantsy Momma and Audrey always look so stunning!
It's just that now that I'm at home with the baby for now and don't have to see my ESL students every day or I don't have to go out if I don't need to, I don't see the need to have to put make-up on (with the exception of lipgloss).
I remember how elegant my grandma always looked in her old photos when she was younger. She wore ruby red lipstick, her hair was always perfectly in place, and her dresses were always pressed. She was a wife, a school principal, and a mother to eight children...and she still looked like a movie star all the time!
Just the other day, I looked in the mirror and realized that Mama needs a new haircut! I do. I really do. My hair has gotten long and unruly. I've got a wedding to go to in May. My cousin and his amazing fiancee are having a traditional Filipino wedding and I'm part of their entourage (I'm one of the sponsors). For any of you who are familiar with Filipino weddings, there's the bridal party (best man, groomsmen, maid of honour, bridesmaids, flower girls, ring bearers), the Godparents, and the sponsors.
Any ideas for haircuts/styles? I need your help trying to find something new and almost maintenance-free! I'm pretty boring and usually just end up getting a couple of inches chopped off. Sometimes I get some layers done to make my hair look thicker, but I never do anything daring. Although, I once told a hairstylist to give my hair a trim and he ended up lopping most of it off and giving me these weird "wings" a la Farrah Fawcett/Charlie's Angels style. That's as daring as I ever got, and it wasn't intentional. Oh, wait. There was the time when I was in Japan and again asked for just a trim. The hairstylist PERMED my hair and gave me bangs! Straight bands and poodle-like hair for the rest of my head.

hi c -
i'm one of those admittedly 'vain' women who NEVER leave the house looking like crap. EVER.

i always have on lipstick and eyeliner. but i'm not dressed to the nines all the time though. i would never go out in sweats or anything. that's too slobby for me. no offense to people that do it, but i am not into looking crappy or looking like i let myself go. even when tc was born, i always made sure to look my best. i didn't want to be one of those moms who don't care about their appearance anymore now that they've had a baby. i feel it's important to have your own sense of self still, even if you're a mom. you can still be a hot mom you know. A MILF!!!!! ha ha.

your mom's saying, 'you'll never know who you'll run into' is so true for me. the community i work in is also where i live so i see students and parents all the time.

as for hairdo suggestions, do you really want to hear mine? how about some sexy rocker chick bangs? side parted and choppy, like razor cut and uneven on the edges. not straight cut china girl bangs either, but slanted bangs that go diagonal. hope that makes sense.

wait, that's like my old hairstyle! ha. no, i'm not trying to transform you!

i really do think that you would look great in layered bangs and perhaps a sexy razor cut bob. shorter in the back and longer in the front. the layers would frame your gorgeous face...

okay, i'll shut up now!

(groan) I know how you feel! I NEVER used to leave my house without a shower, hair hair and makeup done... but now I have two kids AND I live in Gore Bay! The friends I have that live away from here barely recognize me as the same person! And yes my Mum always said the same thing to me about 'letting yourself go'.

As for your hair let me know if you find someone good to go to!

First off Little One is too cute. I love her smile.

I have a 12 week old baby girl and have only worn makeup twice since she was born. I'm now a stay at home mom and only leave the house once or maybe twice a week. I just don't care what other people think. I just have too much to do to worry about makeup. So I know where your coming from. I bet the other ladies at our local new mom's group think I only know how to do a ponytail. :)

I'm sorry I have no hair suggestions for you. I'm in the same boat as you.

Good luck.

Ok I SWEAR I was going to say this even before I scanned over Canine's comment....
BANGS and Layers. And like she said, not straight, china girl bangs (we all know what I mean because we both had them)
I have fallen in love with the razor cut, yet side swept bangs that kinda fall back over the eyes... just a little. Ok so what I just discribed is my hair cut (when it is fresh and new), but I honestly haven't gotten it cut for 5 months and it is just now screaming for a re-do. It grew out effortlessly and requires little sytling post shower.

I hardly wear make-up as it is, like you a little eye liner if I'm getting fancy, mascara and lip gloss. Ok, I do love the blush too. But I also love my PJ days (I am actually still in them and it is 5pm but I'm cleaning house and doing laundry so why bother, right?)

hi c -
just wanted to add that i wear makeup for me and not for others. i don't go full on, just cat eye eyeliner (not amy winehouse'ish though) and lipstick - i don't wear blush or all that heavy foundation stuff.

anyhow, i just saw cherry's comment about hair and bangs. i bet she has cute hair!!! yeah, stay away from china girl bangs (me love you long time). i used to have those too , but in bowl form. not by choice either.

try something new and if you don't like it, your hair will assuredly grow back. i lost ALL of mine from chemo and i'm just dealing with it growing back while looking like a 12 year old boy with a buzz cut.

LOL! Totally cracked me up when I read that it sounds like you're not trying to transform me! Love your old hairstyle though! LOVE it! BUT...You're just way cool enough to sport any kind of 'do, ya know?

Okay, you had me almost peeing in my pants with the "me love you long time" thing!

Yeah, I hear ya about the not leaving the house looking like crap. When I taught in Japan, I was ALWAYS made up. We had to be or else we'd get fired from our school. Okay, maybe not, but we'd get a slap on the wrist and we'd get sent to etiquette school. Seriously. Anyway, one night (and it was like 3AM or something ridiculous), I went to the 7-Eleven to pick up some milk and bread for breakfast the next morning because I had forgotten to go earlier in the evening. Okay, I was out drinking with co-workers and when I got home and ready for bed, I remembered. So, 3AM and I'm in my jeans, a t-shirt, ponytail, baseball cap and no make-up...because it's 3AM and who am I gonna see at that hour? Well, a couple of the university students I taught were on their way home from the bar and they saw me. Ooooooooooh la la! That was BAD. Appearance is EVERYTHING in that country! Japanese girls NEVER look bad...EVER!!!

They gasped and said, "Oh, C********-Sensei (teacher)! A lady should never go out of the house with no make-up!" They were in shock! These are girls who look like Barbie dolls at the gym. Their hair is always in place and they don't break a sweat!!

Okay, after all this is said and done, at least you'll be happy to know that I do not own a single pair of sweat pants!

Are yoga pants a crime though? Cuz I have those...but for yoga and not for going out.

I do know an amazing hairstylist on the Island. Have you heard of Island Styles in Mindemoya? It's owned by the Wahl sisters. I get my hair done by Julie. She and her sister are young and hip. I used to go somewhere else, but it wasn't as "up-to-date" and then I ended up going off-Island. I sometimes even waited until I went back to Toronto or Montreal! LOL!

Thank you soooooooooo much :) I love her smile too! She's just starting to smile a lot now. Well, you know...the kind of smile that is not just from gas!!?!?! :)

I'm going to check out your blog. Thanks for popping by and please stop by again!

Oooooooooooh! I like that! I'm going to have to look into that. May be worth a try! If I don't post any AFTER photos from my before and after, then you'll know why! LOL!

hi c - it's me again

how about an asymetrical bob? sexy...

i was thinking that you'd want something low maintenance...something shorter that the baby won't pull (as much). not sure if you want to keep it long so you can tie your hair back though.

one of my co-workers moved to japan in the mid 90's. she quickly learned that women do not go out of the house unless they looked like a 50's housewife/june cleaver type- nice dress, hair and pearls. she drew shocked stares at the local market when she appeared in jeans or sweats. she and her husband lived in the regular neighborhood instead of on the naval base becuase they wanted a more cultural experience.

i think she was cut some slack since she was a blond American. she quickly endeared herself to her neighbors by giving informal lessons in English, Spanish and cooking lessons, particularly Mexican food.

by the way, check out the new GQ cover for April(look at their website and slideshow) - you'll see...OMFG!

drop dead sexy indeed. try not to lick your computer screen! ha ha!

i'm excited to see what you will eventually do with your hair! :)

The hatchling is looking cuter by the day!

You had a lovely haircut once - I think it was sort of just above the shoulder in length.

Jeanna said...

I think you look great, and I can see you with shorter hair, framing your face, it would really flatter you.
My grandma always said "What the hell are those kids doing now, put that down, will someone get these damn kids out of my kitchen!"

I try my best not to forget about me, but truthfully there are days when I just don't want to do anything. Those are the days I run into an old friend or coworker, never fails.

When is the wedding in May?

As for your hair, I wish I had tips, I never change my style, at least not on purpose go with what is easy for you right now then you will be more inclined to do it.

And new Mom never looks bad, just like a new Mom.

I'm also one of those vain women who always has makeup on, but these days my bare minimum is eyeliner, mascara, & face powder (I'm super oily!). MY hair is pretty wild & unruly, so I do have to make an effort there for sure. My key is lots & lots of layers--but that's because my hair is really heavy & will end up flat & lifeless if I don't. The longer my hair is the less work it is for me, since that helps to keep the wildness calmed down by the weight of it. Don't know if that helps at all or not, but there's my 2 cents. :)

Cool! I'm going to look for photos of potential hairstyles/cuts. Can I tell you how tempted I was to just cut it all off? Okay, I don't know if that was more temptation or frustration!

Thanks for the GQ heads up! *DROOL* I soooooooo have to post a pic of Little One's "Team Edward" onesie! Courtesy of you, actually! One of the books you sent came with iron on "Team Edward" and "Team Jacob" stickers! I WAS going to iron on the "Team Edward" onto one of MY t-shirts, BUT somehow felt too teeny bopper-ish! I think people would cut a 4 month old slack for wearing a Twilight onesie, yes? ;p

I think I know the haircut you mean. I think it was sometime last winter or the winter before that I had my hair cut to above my shoulders. That may work again :) I am torn on whether to just go for a trim or go drastic and unpredictable? Or do I play it safe (as usual)?

Jeanna:
Thanks, my friend! I don't know why I feel like I'm agonizing over something as trivial as a haircut. Weird.

Hey, our house is ALMOST ready to move into. We've been working on it every day (STILL), but we are slowly getting there. We (okay, HUBBY) yanked out the carpets from Little One's room and from the office. I absolutely do not want carpet in the house.

Anyhoo, will post pics of the finished product. Well, maybe. It depends on whether or not the improvements actually look better! LOL!

Jeanna said...

Really, you don't want carpet? Wood floors get so cold and slippery and dusty, although cats seem to love them.
You should see my hair, OMG, if I weren't going through all these St. Pat's photos I'd take a quick snapshot and send it to you.
Let's see, it's a cross between a mutated poodle head and maybe a mushroom cloud. It's like a lopsided fro with bits of grey sneaking in there. And on top of it, it's all glowy from the pool.

Would be different

Little one is SO cute. Gosh she is sure growing fast. You're a new mom, spoil yourself!

Hey. I'd get rid of the carpets as well. Nasty. I hate mine. I think they store up pollen and dust and whatnot no matter if you vacuum every day.

We have a barber shop in town named (don't you love it?) It'll Grow Back.

Hey C.
I can understand what you're saying about the whole looking like a slob thing, however, I am a person who NEVER wears make-up! When my other half and I met, I wore make-up when we went out, but very shortly after moving in, I gave it up! The cows don't care if I wear make-up or do my hair nicely!! lol.
I have completely let myself go since having my little bundle of joy three weeks ago. I DESPERATELY need to get into shape and do something about my appearance. I'm getting a haircut tomorrow, but no idea what I'm getting done with it. I need to work on losing some weight too, so thank goodness the weather has warmed up so I can get walking!! If you want to join me, give me a call. Take care and remember that you want to set a good example for your little one and teach her how to look glamourous, so keep putting on that lip gloss!! JK. You're beautiful just as you are!

P.S. About your haircut, maybe try putting in some loose curls and if you like the look, get a spiral perm or something. I think you would look good with wavy hair. Just a thought. : )

why don't you do that rihanna hair that i did for your cartoon?? That look totally slick! :)

caninecologne said...

hi c
it's me again. i like ck's idea. the rihanna look is hot hot hot! your avatar that she designed is sporting an asymetrical bob. i woulnd't go with curls, that will add volume to your face. my opinion.

oh no you didn't girl! team edward on the baby's onesie? : )

holy hell - those GQ rob photos are just too much. even though i don't condone smoking, he makes smoking a cig look hot!

Sorry I didn't see this post earlier C... (you look great, BTW).
I am always in a hair dilemma. And you've seen my pix when I did the bob, asymm bob, then grew it out...and then chopped it again, and regretted it. So the one piece of advice I would give you as a mom to a young one is to not go too short with a cut that requires too many trims. A longer style will last more weeks. So a layered option is nice; and you can always tie it back when you're just doing things around the house. I think side swept bangs, uneven bangs like Cherry suggested, are a great idea.

I only started really wearing makeup again when little G was a few months old and I went out with her (spring, as she was a winter baby). You won't believe how much better you feel once you do that... and yeah, I've been caught a time or two without any makeup and seeing someone I hadn't seen in ages. Fun stuff.
