critters

Fascinated by all the wildlife I see on the Island, I have been trying to document what I've seen so far. Unfortunately, I never seem to have the foresight to bring my camera with me every time I leave the house!! Here are but a few of the critters I've seen to date. Sadly, I missed taking photos of the two black bear cubs I saw (near Bay Estates and the second one in West Bay). I have also seen turkey vultures, an American Eagle, Coppers hawks, blue jays, chickadees, hummingbirds, luna moths, partridges, sandhill cranes, woodpeckers, porcupines, (skunks and racoons are common), muskrats, 4 wolves (on my MIL's farm)...and the list goes on.

The fox kits pic is from our property. The groundhog was on our property and the beach critters and my students were taken in Southbay. The pic of the deer in our yard isn't that clear. Sorries :)

Hehe! Honestly, Ms. J, I haven't been bothered with the black flies at all here. Hubby told me to warn you not to come in May to mid-June because that's when there are some. July to October's pretty safe :) Plus, I figured your boys will be done school in July anyway, so you wouldn't be coming in blackfly season. Hey, you can catch a few pow wows and star parties if you come in the summer!

hehehe, I'm just joking around ( well sort of - I won't come before mid-June if that's what your hubby recommends! ) Honestly, mosquitoes don't bother me at all, but I was traumatized at an early age by a black fly bite in my eye - it was horrible. I do think you've got me hooked on the idea of heading up there with my boys this summer though, or maybe just with my older son. Yay!

I'll bug you closer to the time about where to stay and all that sort of stuff. 5 hours for the drive and ferry is not bad at all!

WOWOWOWOWOWOW!!! You guys have so much nature and wildlife where you are! I saw the salmon run- does that count? And a little chipmunk by the bridal veil falls. We saw more than a dozen deer while sightseeing there. We'll be back Chris! You wont be able to get rid of us! lol

wots a good time of the year to visit. Is it cool year round or does it get warmer in summer?

Hi Pete! No, we are nowhere near Niagara Falls--though the Niagara Escarpment extends all the way here! You can go hiking up the Cup and Saucer trails and that's part of the Niagara Escarpment. The view from up top is beautiful.

A lot of the tourists from the US and Europe usually sightsee around the Island for a few days and drive down to Toronto, Niagara Falls, Ottawa, Montreal, etc. It's quite a feat to fit everything in on limited time. Niagara on the Lake is gorgeous. The ice wine, the winery tours, the Falls...very nice.

I'd be more than happy to send you some links so you and Yuka can plan your trip if you ever decide to venture to Canada.
