I'm such a failure....

I have no idea why, but I have never been able to successfully make Jell-O. For some reason, mine just never congeals. What is supposed to be one of the easiest, dummy-proof things to do, always ends up as a disaster.

On a side note, I used to eat Jell-O as a kid. However, as a teenager and young adult, I stopped eating Jell-O when I became vegetarian because I discovered (as many vegetarians do) that Jell-O consists of animal matter. "Gelatin is basically processed collagen, which is a structural protein in animals' connective tissue, skin, and bones."

Anyway, this past week at the homestead, we’ve all been plagued with flu-like symptoms (and we even had the darn flu shots in the beginning of winter to prevent this from happening!). We thought that Jell-O would perhaps make our sore throats feel better. But alas, I can’t seem to get my Jell-O to not be watery. I guess we’ll have to resort to drinking hot ginger tea and honey! Hubby hates ginger tea and thinks it tastes wretched! It’s sort of like Buckley’s. "It tastes awful And it works!" (Check out the horrible grammar! Buckleys, you should know that you never begin a sentence with ‘And’!) LOL!

Christine didn't one of your roommates used to say that Buckley's tastes like Pine-Sol and has the consistency of sperm? That's gross! But Buckley's works! I swear by the stuff and so does my DH! Whenever he feels sicky he goes straight for the Buckleys and he's as good as new.

Wow, I didn't know gelatin is so gross. I thought it's just sticky stuff like rice starch or something. Sorry to hear to go flu-symptoms. But aren't you supposed to get sick after the shots? To build anti-biotics in your system around the dead-flu-cells that you've injected in your body? Sorry, I just don't believe in flu shots enough... injecting the dead cells of things that supposed to get you sick... I don't know.

Anyhow, I swear by ginger-teas and roasted garlics. Roasted the garlics with a little bit of olive oil, and it'll pump up the energy and immune system like you won't believe.

Jesus... see what I mean by my declining English? I meant to say, "Sorry to hear that you got flu-symptoms..." not "sorry to hear to go flu-symptoms." Oi vey.

Chris - that is so funny, I can't make Jell-o to save my life either! I think I don't let the crystles dissolve enough or something - there's always this rubbery layer on the bottom of the bowl. Blech.

I swear by Cold F/X - love that stuff! Also hot water, fresh lemon juice, honey to taste and cloves ( whiskey is optional! ) is great for sore throats. I love Traditional Medicinals Cold Formula tea also - great too for a sore throat. I think they sell Traditional Medicinals tea at Shoppers, and definitely at the health food store.

Joanne, that is soooooo funny! MY Jello always ends up like that too! I ALWAYS have a rubbery thing at the bottom of the bowl and the rest is watery.

Curiosity, I don't believe in the flu shot either. This was actually the very first time I ever got the flu shot. Because my father is an "at risk" patient since his immune system is weak, as well as my nieces, who have weak immune systems, if I am to be around them, I need to have the flu shot. Grrr. Hubby, working on the First Response Team, needs the flu shot too, because he's in contact with so many people.

I don't know if I ever want to get the shot again. I had boycotted it for all these years. That being said, I was always more sickly in the city than up here. Here, I haven't really been sick at all, except for the past week :)

Curiosity, I actually don't mind the ginger tea. I drink it with honey and I feel much better. Either that or cider vinegar does the trick :)

Joanne, I also do the hot water, lemon and honey concoction :) I love that stuff! My niece was sick the other day and I was babysitting her...I gave her the hot lemon/honey drink and her throat felt much better. She actually kept asking for more! :)

Curiosity, do you just eat the roasted garlic as is? Like after you roast them in olive oil, do just eat them like that? Just plain roasted garlic? If so, I can do that! I LOVE garlic!

My little brother laughs at me because I use garlic in almost every dish I cook. Can't help it! I love garlic...and it's good for you too!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!! You are so funny, Ms Christine!

Yup. Just freshly roasted garlic out of the pan/oven and eat them like a tiny potatoe. One clove is good enough for a person. I swear by it. I always get a jolt of energy and gets me going for hours. That's my remedy and it's way better than caffeine. Lasts way longer too. And it tastes great. Just make sure you have breath mint and wear a little perfume.

A Hot Toddy always works for me. They also say "A pint of Guiness a day keeps the doctor away!"

chris, buckleys does work- i get the sugar free one and it's awsome!
i have also had that problem with Jello getting all gross on the bottom of the bowl. You can buy the pre-made ones now that come in individual servings- much easier and no mess!!
