Life's Most Serious Conversations Begin At The Dinner Table

In between bites of Shepherd's Pie and swigs of Crystal Light (yes, I appear to have been lulled in by the Crystal Light ads on the sidebar of my blog! Thanks, BlogHer ads! LOL!), Hubby, The Student and I discussed some of life's ever so important topics.

Politics.

The environment.

Alternative engergy.

Wildlife.

Hockey.

The greatest movie actors of all time.

Yes, you heard right! We debated and deliberated for the longest time about who we thought were the best male and best female movie actors. I'm tellin' ya, there was some serious disagreeing going on! It may sound strange, but my opinions on politics and the environment came much easier than my top five actors and actresses.

In my younger years, I think I would have said Brad Pitt, Richard Gere, Matt Dillon, and Tom Cruise. Now that I'm older, I realize I think that I liked them for their screen presence and their looks. I hope I don't offend anyone (I probably will offend either way) I don't really think Brad's a great actor. Richard was at his best in An Officer and a Gentleman. I just liked the 'bad boy' image of Matt Dillon. Tom Cruise? What was I thinking?

If I had to choose who I think are the best actors now, I'd have to say Sean Connery, Robert Redford, Al Pacino...and??? I don't know. It's so hard to choose! I like Wil Smith and think he's proved that he can play more serious roles now. I don't know if he's a great actor though. I like him. I can't stand Leonardo Di Caprio for some reason. The only movies I liked him in was What's Eating Gilbert Grape? and Catch Me If You Can. I cannot stand Nicholas Cage for some reason. I don't know why, but his presence just annoys me. He just annoys me - the same way Horatio does on CSI Miami. Gah! Know what I mean?

As for female choices? When I was younger, I LOVED Drew Barrymore, Juliette Binoche, Julia Ormond, Ashley Judd, Julia Roberts, Julianne Moore, and Nicole Kidman.

Now? I think I'd have to say Meryl Streep, Sigourney Weaver, Susan Sarandon, Kate Hudson, Anne Hathaway, Cate Blanchett, Emma Thompson, and maybe Kate Beckinsale.

Who do you choose as your top five actors? Top five actresses?

Remember, we're talking about great acting and not just physical appeal :)

Hello, mate! It has been a long time since I last visited your blog. Got your e-mail. I looked all over the place for the musical Totoro figure, but could not find the exact same model as the one you had. Shall I keep searching or can I send you another model? I know the one you had had sentimental attachment.

As for this post, I have to say for male actors:
Hugh Jackman, Dustin Hoffman, Russell Crowe and Anthony Hopkins.

Female:
Scarlet Johanson, Angelina Jolie, and Kate Hudson.

Ta for the chocolates you sent in the post.

T:
I love Matthew McConnoughey too. I really like his movies and I think he's a good actor, but I don't know if I'd go as far as to say that he's one of the greatest actors of all time.

Dina:
Oh! I haven't seen Benjamin Button yet! So, you recommend seeing it?

Merinz:
Oh! Steve McQueen!!! As for Sean Connery, I think like a good wine, he gets better with age! He is one of my all time faves!

Jimmy:
Love all your choices! I think Charles Bronson was great in action movies, but don't recall seeing him in anything BUT action movies.

Gah! You said Nicholas Cage!!! I have noooooo idea why, but he really annoys me. I think it's his facial expressions and I also think he's sort of one-dimensional as an actor. That's just me though! :) :)

Yeah, I like all your female pics. You woulda killed me if you said Pamela Anderson was one of the greatest actresses of all time though! ;p

HM:
Really? Angelina? I don't know about that one. Then again, it depends on what we constitute as "great" acting or a "great" film, right? Oh, and Sharon Stone? I don't remember her being in anything other than Basic Instict...or Cat Woman.

Starshine:
Did I ever tell you about the time I went out for coffee after school with a bunch of my students? It was during the Toronto International Film Festival. Guess who was sitting next to us? ROBIN WILLIAMS!! He was so nice and was asking my Japanese, Korean and Mexican students questions about their countries and if they liked it in Canada. Very friendly and funny!

We also saw the Olson Twins. LOL! Funny thing is that no one was really paying attention to them. They were surrounded by their bodyguards, but no one even looked at them. Weird.

I actually liked them when they played Michelle Tanner on Full House. They were cute back then.

Pete:
Oh! They no longer have that model? So sad!! :( My Japanese co-teacher got it for me in Kurashiki when we went on a trip there before I returned to Canada. I was hoping to keep it for Little One, but while we were in the hospital and the house was getting renovated, it got destroyed.

I'll check out the other models and will let you know. Thanks so much! :)

Good afternoon from Athens, Greece.
Eventhough it's already a quarter to one in the morning and the kid finally asleep started to think about those actors...well, Robert de Niro is for sure one of them.
Tom Hanks too, together with Nicolas Cage in 'last exit las vegas'. Roberto Benini in 'life is beautiful' for sure too!
The fifth one I can't remember his name, but he played in the movie 'the bicycle teaf'.
Please have a nice weekend - and thank you very much for your comment!

I think Dustin Hoffman is talented and versatile! And he looks like my husband!

Karen MEG said...

I'm laughing at Sharon's comment..I remember her and her girls' posts about how much her hubby looked like Dustin!

So many great actors, but I'll stick to more recent as opposed to the golden classics...

for me, the guys:
Ralph Fiennes
Denzel Washington
Ryan Gosling
Gary Oldman
Daniel Day Lewis

honorable mentions:
Philip Seymour Hoffman
Edward Norton
Robert Downey Jr.

The ladies:
Emma Thompson
Julianne Moore
Kate Winslet
Laura Linney
Meryl Streep (she has to be here)

hon. mentions:
Cate Blanchett
Marisa Tomei
Cate Blanchett

Fun post. Next you'll have to decide when you'll be able to get out to see the movies LOL!

I don't have a list for you right now but I had to agree with you about Nick Cage. He just bugs me to no end.

What is the difference between Bird Flu and Swine Flu?

I agree when you say Sean Connery. I have Dustin Hoffman and Andy Garcia added to my list.
