show and tell

Mom: Where's that book you wrote and illustrated in college?
Me: Ahhh...I don't know.
Mom: What? I love that book and I want you to give it to me so I can read it to my grandchildren!
Me: You don't have any grandchildren.
Mom: I know, but when I do have some, I want to read them that book! Where is it??
Me: *sigh* I really don't know. Somewhere in a box, maybe?
Mom: Arrrgh. You really should have had it published!

Yes, I did write and illustrate a children's book many moons ago. My college prof told me she wanted me to get it published. I was never confident in my own work and though I loved this creation of mine, I never went for it. I admit, I am a wimp and I cannot take any criticism even if it's constructive. I suck.

Mom wanted my book, so I decided to look for it. Leafing through my book collection in my library upstairs, I came across a few of my most beloved children's books. Though our nieces are now at the age where they are reading short novels, we still indulge in some all time faves.

LOVE YOU FOREVER by Robert Musch is a book I used to read to my little brother when he was a tot. Every time I read the story, it makes me happy and sad at the same time. I realize how 'mortal' my parents are and that one day they will get older and weaker, but the cycle of life continues with the next generation.

THE GIVING TREE by Shel Silverstein is more of a parable of the gift of giving. I tried to upload a pic of the front cover of the book, but I'm having problems getting the pic up on blogger :(

Chris, we read those two stories to our kids and they really enjoy them. Anything Robert Munsch! The Giving TRee is great but the kids aren't attracted to the illustrations as much. Theyre not that colorful. Anyway, both books you posted on are great. I also love the one you wrote for your little brother though. That was for your Children's Lit class right? Did you find it? You should get it published! It's great!

You must get your book published!! You cannot deprive the hundreds of thousands of children the joy of your story!!! C'mon Chrissy!!!

vThanks, Curiosity and T :) I can't help but feel very self-conscious of my work though. I've never been good at literary criticism...or any type of criticism, artistic or otherwise! I once did this gorgeous painting in acrylic (I called it "dreamscape") and an artist friend of my dad's kept pointing out things I needed improvement with. Of course, his art and my art were not similar in taste at all, but I still felt very self-conscious after that! lol

Thanks, Merinz! How did you find my blog amongst all the blogs in cyber space? Thanks for reading and I'm so excited to have a reader from NZ! I love Kiwis and would love to one day visit NZ and Oz!

Harold and the Purple Crayon ( http://www.amazon.com/Harold-Purple-Crayon-Anniversary-Books/dp/0064430227 ) is one of my personal favorites.

Christine, if you ever want to know more about self-publishing, please feel free to drop me a note, like a lot of things, it's a topic that I know way too much about!

PS. Dina, me too! Whenever I used to read it to PJ, I'd be bawling my eyes out before even finishing the book!

BTW, what books have you got for Elie now? I'd like to send him some children's books :)
