It's Never Too Late

It's been nearly five weeks since my friend, British Lion returned to the UK and I'm only now getting around to posting about his visit to the Island.

BL spent nearly a month with us and we got to do a lot of sightseeing when I wasn't teaching. He also got to help Hubby on the farm (mending fences that the cattle seem to like to go through) and splitting/piling/loading firewood.

Here are some photos of an interesting tree we saw. I had to take a photo of this tree! When I was a kid, I used to imagine that there were magical little wood nymphs living in tree trunks that look like this! I know...I had a very vivid imagination as a child!

Here we have British Lion and my student on our visit to the Bridal Veil Falls in Kagawong. They were standing behind the falls. At this time of the year it was more of a light trickle than a powerful rush. It was still pretty though.

In the bottom photo, we were taking a walk on the trail at the falls. It's a really lovely trail. It's a very peaceful and relaxing walk. We saw the salmon swimming upstream. It's so sad that this is the end of their run and then they die.
The next photos are of our walk on our property. The fall colours on the Island are just brilliant! The camera just does not do the colours any justice! I always feel bummed out that I can't ever capture the beauty of the leaves and the trees as I see them with my own eyes.

Chance just loves running through the fields. He didn't have this kind of freedom to run around when we lived in the city! He has so much room to run around that he sometimes does not know what to do with himself!

Fred (mama cat) and one of her kittens. Aren't they cute?

Look at the trees!!! Ooooooooh, they're so BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!

I love that shot with your kitten perching on the branch. She looks almost like a lion... except WAY sweeter.

WISH I AM THERE!!!

gorgeous photos! we don't really have seasons here in sd so it's nice to see leaves actually change color! lovely!

re: your cats

Yes! The trees were sooooo pretty! I just love all the brilliant reds, oranges, yellows, golds and greens! Walks in the woods are lovely with the fresh air and Chance at my heels! Wish you were here too! I miss you!

mrinz:
I don't suppose you guys get fall colours over where you are? Do you even get any snow in the winter or none at all? My friends in Oz say that they spend Christmas ON THE BEACH!!! I've always had a "White Christmas" (with the exception of the times when we spent the holidays in Florida). Even when we spend Christmas with our family in New York, there's snow.

Thanks! BTW, great caption contest (as usual)!

LOL! It's a LONG story! We got the cats when they were kittens and we were told they were brothers. We named them Fred and George because...Well, I have no idea why we named them Fred and George!! We then found out they were not brothers. They were sisters and they soon became pregnant! We think the cat who got them pregnant came from my MIL's farm next door! Anyway, we never changed their names because Fred and George seemed to stick.

I like Bert's guess is great! I wonder if subconsciously I was thinking of the Weasley twins! You know how much I love the Harry Potter series...and I do love the Weasley brothers! LOL! Seriously! :)

One more thing! I was looking at the photo of our cats (Fred and George) on my sidebar, and they DO remind me of Fred and George Weasley! They are both ginger coloured (the same colour hair as the Weasley twins')!

I still think Hermione is the coolest girl ever!

When you switched your masthead to that picture of Chance I meant to tell you how much I liked it! The colors of the trees are beautiful.

thanks for the background on your cats fred and george. yes, my husband thought they were named after the weasley twins because they have the same coloring (reddish, or 'ginger' as it's also known in canad and the u.k.)

Cherry:
Awwww! Thanks! :)

Canine:
You know, I really like Bert's idea. I think the girls will now be named after the Weasley brothers! LOL! I really wonder why I named them Fred and George! Funny!

Those are the most beautiful photos! It puts me in a serene state of mind.
Is that your home next to the huge barn? I would love to have a huge barn with a little apartment tucked away in a corner for me to live in!

Uncivil said...

Whoops! I can't believe I did that? I meant me & Abigail and Emily to live in!

Uncivil:
Yes, sir! That sure is our humble little abode next to that big barn :) We love it. If we want company, we go out or invite friends and family over. If we want to be alone, we don't have lots of neighbours too close to bug us with noise or anything :) It's tucked away amidst the trees...our little slice of heaven.

Okay, I can't stand it any longer! I have been reading your blog for a long time now, but never take the time to comment, and so, here I am!! I love your pictures, they are bringing back so many memories of our trips to the Island. My family and I LOVE Manitoulin, and we were hoping to go back this summer, but finances were tight. We love everything about Manitoulin, in fact, we have been contemplating moving there, but just havent't had the right opportunity. Well, we did at one point a few years ago. I was looking into buying the Manitoulin Soap Factory when it was for sale ( I make soap). That didn't work out, but now I can live vicariously through your blog! We stayed at a campground outside of Kagawong a few summers ago ( Mike's Park) and it was very hard leaving, my kids and I were in tears. I just wanted to thank you so much for your wonderful blog, I read it every day, and get very upset when you don't post! :o)

Question for you.. when we were seriously looking into homes and so forth there, we were told to not bother, as people on Manitoulin don't want outsiders moving onto the island. Do you think this is true? We heard it from more than one person, sort of like "Good luck moving there, they don't like anyone not from teh Island." Well, I am still hinting heavily at my dh about moving there!!

Thanks again!
Ellen

Love the photos C! Looks like BL had an amazing visit with you wonderful hosts too.
Such gorgeous colours.
I love it that you named your cats with people names. Too cute.

Ellie:
Oh, my goodness! What a pleasant surprise! Thank you so much for commenting! I think it's so neat that you almost bought the Manitoulin Soap Factory! I know the owners and they are very nice people :)

As for your question, I think that in many ways, what you said is true to a certain degree. I suppose that in the city, everything changes all the time and people don't notice changes that much, where as if you are in a small community, everyone notices everything. True, people don't always welcome change and new people, but I haven't had any negative experiences thus far. I am out there in the community (I'm on a few boards and committees) and I thoroughly enjoy living here.

I am so glad you left me a note! You totally made my night! :) I think it would be wonderful if you and your family moved here! :)

Karen:
LOL! The cat names...I still don't know why I named them Fred and George! My students from South Korea named the kittens and that is a funny story! One of the kittens is named Milkis because it is a favourite Korean drink. It's sort of like a milk flavoured pop. Another kitten was named Buchimgae, which is a Korean dish. It's sort of like Japanese Okonoliyaki (a kind of seafood or meat pancake with shredded cabbage).

Neither of the kittens responds to their names. LOL!

Unknown said...

Urgh! That would be "Okonomiyaki"...not whatever else I wrote! ;)

Hi there! I lurk forever and now you get two posts from me in one night! It would be great if you linked your blog to mine! I'm sorry I never asked you about linking yours on mine, I was so thrilled to see your blog, that I didn't think to ask at the time!

Thanks!
I will post some Manitoulin pictures on my blog when I can find them!
