Totally Random Thursday

Over the past week, it's been hard not to hear anything about the Listeria outbreak. Listeriosis has been all over the news. It's on TV, on the internet, in the newspapers, on the radio, in casual conversations between friends and people in line at the grocery store.

All these food recalls are pretty scary. Not only are some meat products/deli meats contaminated, but there have been other outbreaks with produce over the past while too. I may sound a bit anal, but this is one of the reasons I choose to grow my own produce. I know where my food comes from, I know what is in it, and I know what hasn't been put into it.

I can't tell you how many people have e-mailed me a list of recalled products in the past few days! All I can think of are the words Michael Pollan stressed in In Defense of Food. He wrote "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants." Of course, the argument is much more involved than that simple statement. You'll have to read the book to see what he's getting at. A lot of what he writes makes a lot of sense (at least to me it does!).Even before I read Michael Pollan's books, I tried to make sure Hubby and I don't eat too many processed or convenience foods. The idea of processed food just makes me feel like we're not eating real food.

Anyway, before I get slammed for my opinions on food choices, I'll go onto my next random topic.

We've got tons and tons...and TONS of fresh produce this summer. We've got beans,
zucchini, cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers and gourds coming out of our ears! What to do with all these fresh veggies? We've got lots of field corn too, but that's not for eating. The cattle will be very happy! This photo of Hubby in the corn field was taken a few weeks ago. The corn was about 7 ft tall then. Right now, it's about 9 ft tall. I did plant sweet corn too, but I sort of let things go. I just couldn't keep up with everything. We may get some corn for eating or we may not...but I hope we do.

Unfortunately, I spoke too soon a few weeks ago when I announced that my ALL DAY sickness, nausea, vomiting, and food aversions had miraculously disappeared! Guess what? For the past three days, I've been sick, sick, sick.

Before I got pregnant, I hated the taste of natural soy milk. It tasted like chalk to me! Last week, I couldn't get enough original flavoured soy milk! Now, it smells like cat litter to me! *Gag* I cannot believe how quickly my tastes and preferences change these days! Crazy!

Poor Hubby has had to go meatless again. I just can't stomach even the thought of meat! Here are a few of the dishes he's had to put up with!
Hey! I had to use up some of those tomatoes and beans!
An open-faced tomato sandwich and a piece of meatless/wheat-free lasagna. I didn't feel like using lasagna noodles and instead of meat, I used zucchini. Basically, it was almost all veggies. Hubby didn't complain, but I have a feeling he'll be going to my parents' house soon since they always serve meat!

Hmmm...more randomness for you. I'm in the process of organizing our 15 year high school reunion. With the aid of Facebook, I've been able to keep everyone in the loop by creating a Class of '93 group for our high school. If you've ever tried to organize a big event before, you'll agree with me that it's not an easy feat! Try accommodating everyone's schedules and pleasing everyone! It's impossible! We'll see if we can make this happen. A group of former classmates tried organizing a reunion for our 10 year, but that never came to fruition.

Here's the venue for our reunion (which we hope will take place in October). One last random tidbit. I've been thinking a lot about what our baby will look like. I am so curious to see what the mix of Hubby's and my genes will be like. Most of all, I just keep thinking of how I just want a happy and healthy baby. That's all that matters. This said, I am hoping that our little one will be as cute as my little nephew is! He is such a precious little angel! I just love, love, love him!!! Middle Bro and SIL, I hope you don't mind but I borrowed this from your Facebook! :)

Those dishes look deLISH and better than what I've been eating for sure. I have to go to Phil's to get a good meal.
Sorry you're sick again, what about the chocolate flavored soy milk?

I'm going to try to get myself to the Chocolate Works sometime in the near future. I was wondering if you have Chocolate-opoly yet? I figure, a discerning chocolate lovin' gal like you needs something like this.

Chocolateopoly.htm

Let me know if you've already got it.

I've seen the board game a zillion times (each time I'm at the Chocolate Works) and I've been meaning to buy it. Just today, a new blog pal of mine mentioned having it. Can I tell you how jealous I was? LOL!

As for the chocolate flavoured soy milk...It's my ABSOLUTE fave!!! The only thing is I can't drink it right now because it's loaded with sugar :( Boooooo!!!

Thank you :) I've got produce from my garden, and I'm also helping my Dad clean out his garden! It's a collaborative effort! His garden is THRIVING!!!

That Listeria outbreak is so scary... the effect is just rippling... even to restaurants. Ugh.

What a fab garden you have.. everything is so fresh and green!

Hope you're 15th anniversary highschool reunion works out... a friend of mine tried to get our 25th going this year, but the FB group got invaded by a lot of others... so we had a mini one here with just 4 of us last week. Man, we're all old now ;)

Hope your nausea is short-lived... oh the joys of pregnancy!

Be well, C. (and Kenny, he is a little boy now, not so much baby... but still so adorable!)

Sorry about the sugar, Sug, I can't drink that stuff any more either for other reasons.
I don't have it, but I may have seen it. I'm too busy throwing stuff over the balcony to let anything much in the house. That includes board games. And considering the last few weeks of landlord made hell, I'm never sure when I'll be tossed out or what. I do know that every time they pull some crap I chuck things over the railing. It makes me feel better somehow. Soon there will be nothing left but old videos. Did you ever watch Word Wars, btw?
There is something quite bizarre about Best of Show for Ferrets on TV right now.

It is pretty freaky, isn't it? Restaurants too, eh? Gah!

I really hope our 15 year reunion works out too. It's been a real "challenge" (being polite here!) to get things on track. I live 8~9 hrs away from my "hometown" and it's hard to get things done from this end. Luckily, a friend of mine from high school has been proactive and he is doing all the leg work from that end. He's been checking out the venues, etc.

The same thing happened for our 10 year reunion. Everyone wanted a reunion, but no one really committed to it and it never happened. I'm really hoping it turns out, otherwise this pregnant woman is going to be very pissed that she did all that work for nothing! LOL!

P.S. I knowwwwwwwww!!! :( He's not a baby anymore!!! He's 17 months old now :( They grow so fast!!

Oh, good thing I didn't send it then! :) I'm just going to have to send you perishable/edible things instead! ;)

Sorry to hear about the landlord situation. I can see how throwing things over the railing can make you feel better!! ;)

I haven't gotten a chance to watch the video yet, but I was just holding in my hands last night and thought that I really needed to watch it and report back to you! Soon, I promise!

There was a TV program last night on Chocolate. I wanted to let you know about it, but then didn't know if you would have the same programs as us here in Canada. I can't remember what it was called, but I'll have to do some investigating. It was pretty neat! Right up your alley! Although, one part about a spa that uses chocolate treatment sounded a bit much. There was this lady being covered with shaved chocolate all over her body and having a chocolate facial (that sounded really bad, didn't it? LOL!). All I kept thinking is "Man! What a waste of chocolate! You could be EATING that!!"

I imagine it is quite the experience for the senses though!

I love fresh veggies but we haven't cooked much this summer because of the heat.

He is too cute. :)

I used to make zucchini pizza bites. Basically, you cut your zucchini in circular pieces and place them down on a deep cookie sheet. Top each piece with a sliced tomatoe, fresh veggies of your choice (peppers, onions, etc), you can add bacon if you want meat, or pepperoni {you can leave it out though C ;)}, then top each circle with spices and cheese. Cook for about 15 minutes {I think, but it's been awhile since we had big enough zucchinis to do this}, until the pieces are tender. Each bite is tasty!

Every pregnancy made me vegetarian, because the minute I touched raw meat, I was convinced it was never cooked...Hubby used to test the meat, because I could never be convinced it wasn't raw, even after sauteeing it for 20 minutes...lol

I cooked many roasts {less meat-touching} and ate the steamed veggies and lots of legumes. :)

I still dont' enjoy meat much {after 10 years of pregnancies :)}, but I do cook it for the kids.

As for the Chocolate comment, well, mmmmm. Chocolate has its own food group. :) You do realize that Chocolate Works carries sugar-free chocolates, if you are worried about your sugar intake? :)

And the Chocolate-opoly game is very fun. :) I might be convinced to invite you to our yearly chocolate party {Belgian chocolate in a fountain, fruits, junk food and games!}. This year we were planning on playing Chocolate-opoly as well as Cranium {our regular game}.

ooh He's darling! I can't wait to see your baby looks like :) Look at all your produce! Yum. Sorry the sickness is back. It happens. And the funny cravings that come and go..just your body's way of telling you what it needs at the time. Just go with it. haha

Wow your garden grows well. It is so satisfying to wander out and pick your own produce.
