Birth

This morning we awoke to something really exciting! The alarm went off and I was about to get out of bed to make breakfast for our homestay student. I had one cat on my right side and another on the left. When the cats heard P1 go to the kitchen, one of them ran to the kitchen --a daily ritual, since that means it's time to get fed! The other cat did not scamper as usual. She stayed in bed, but was pushing against my leg. She was really forceful and persistent. I sat up and saw that she was delivering her kittens on our bed!!! I just saw this tiny little kitten coming out of tiny little George (practically on my leg!) and gasped, "Honey!!! She's having kittens...on our bed!!" Hubby jumped out of bed and ran downstairs to fetch the box with old blankets that I set up in the laundry room for George's delivery. We didn't think she was going to have her first litter so soon! I was really surprised that she had her kittens in our room, since I would have thought she'd prefer somewhere quiet and secluded...not with us around!

The babies are soooooooo tiny! They look like little rats! George started delivery around 7 AM, with the first kitten being born at 7:08. I missed the birth of the second kitten, but the third was born around 10 AM. The three are all so different! Baby #1 is a charcoal/slate colour with a bit of white around the eyes. I may call him Squeaky because minutes after he was born, he started making the cutest little squeaking sounds! Baby #2 looks like a mini George. He's the spitting image of his mama! I was thinking of naming him LG (Little George). Baby#3 is mainly dark with bits of George's colouring. I jokingly told Hubby I'm calling him/her Slurpy because he/she's a hungry little kitten and makes a lot of slurping sounds! I haven't gotten a close enough look yet to determine the sex of the third kitten and I am going to wait a few days before I handle them. I'd like George to bond with them first.

I'll be heading to K-town for my little nephew's baptism this weekend, but I am having a difficult time tearing myself away from the kittens! LOL!

Little George is so exhausted after delivering her first litter of kittens. She only had three, which is perfect because someone we know wants two of the kittens for her ranch and we wanted to keep one. Now the only difficult decision is which one to keep? They're all so cute!!!

This is so sweet! Look at those little things. And look at proud mommy staring at the camera so proudly. And she wanted to deliver her kits right there with you! What an honor!

Great photos! What a great event.

That is so cool that she decided to share her kittens birth with you and hubby. I love this post, almost makes me want a cat.

I think you need to change George's name to Georgia! and Fred to Fredricka!

Congratulations on your new additions! I love to observe cat mums, they are generally so relaxed and loving with their babies.

We have had several litters from various cats over the years and I am always so sad when it is time to part with the kittens - unless of course they are curtain climbers!

Our last litter was about 15 years ago and we still have the Mother cat and her 'kitten'!

I must do a posting sometime of our cats and their adventures.

How cool is that! What an amazing way to wake up. I bet George didn't get a good night sleep last night!

Yes, I know! It's a zoo over here! LOL! We've got two cats (well, three, but one left and never came back), three kittens (born today), one dog, and a lot of cattle!

Mrs.Mogul:
I love the name Slurpy too! It's just so fitting and so cute! LOL! Oh, that would be great...thanks for the linky luv!

Dan:
Would Lulu like to babysit sometime? :)

Yes! They are sooooo tiny! I was surprised when they came out! LOL! I told John that I thought they were rats! LOL!

Dina:
I know!! I wanted to keep them ALL, but John said I'm only allowed to keep ONE out of the litter! Booooo! Then again, I don't know if I'd like to be known as the crazy cat lady that everyone knows! LOL!

Uncivil:
Awww shucks! You're too sweet! BTW, you know, you're not the first person to suggest a name change! LOL! We named them Fred and George because we thought they were brothers...and then soon discovered they were female! LOL! The names sort of stuck! Too funny!

merinz:
Thank you! You are so right about cat mums! I was really surprised that she was sooooooo quiet through the entire thing. She didn't even make a single squeal or anything! She just seemed to instinctively know what to do!

Annie:
That's funny you mentioned that! George seemed to be in a lot of discomfort last night and I didn't know why. We seriously thought she was having her kittens either on the weekend or early next week! Anyway, last night she was kind of aloof and really hissy with our other cat. Who would have known she'd have her babies this morning!? It was a neat experience. I can't believe how little the babies are!

Chrissy, re. your bed... ahehehe - I think I'll just censor this comment lest people think that my mind's always in the gutter!

If I were in your shoes, oh, I'd just love love love to keep Squeaky! Black cats, in my humble opinion, are way cool.

And, I beg to differ from Uncivil's comment, Fred and George are perfectly fine female feline names. What's in a name, anyway?

Doggy Mama:
Yes, it was really cool to see the birth. It wasn't gross at all! I was really surprised how well George handled everything on her own.

Eve:
Thanks for popping by! :) The kittens are so cute. I am sure they'll change features within the next few weeks...or days even! Right now they all have squishy faces and really short legs! LOL! I'm amazed at how they can find their mom's milk even with their eyes closed!

Kim:
Yay! You're back! I agree with your comment about Squeaky! It's sooooooo hard because they're all so adorable though! LOL!

Sadly, we lost one of the kittens this afternoon. George, being an inexperienced first-time mom, rolled over a kitten and smothered it. When I came home today, I found the little thing laying in the box, lifeless :( So sad.

Congrats on the new additions! I tried to post earlier but kept deleting my comments somehow. I think it's the allergy meds - hopelessly doped.

They are so sweet - my Little G would adore them and would take one home. Too bad her mommy is allergic!

Acck! I just noted the comment about the poor kittie! That's so sad - I bet that happens a lot with cats and their first litters.

Awww... the proud mommy looking up so connected with the world with her babies around her.

Sorry about the one kitten. But it's no one's fault.

Congratulations nonetheless.

Hey Karen and CK:
Yes, the kittens are soooo cute and it was such a cool experience. I was heart broken when that little one died on day 2 of its time on earth. I wonder if its mom realizes that we took the dead kitten out of the box? She must notice something's not right. It's so sad. Again, I think I make a sucky farmer's wife since I have such a hard time with the whole life and death part :(

Auuuuggghhhhhhh!!!!!! I hope it wasn't Squeaky! (If it was, please don't tell me.)

Kim:
It wasn't Squeaky! :( It was Slurpy!
